Angst time! Wow it took a lot longer than it should have to finish this

Standard Disclaimer: I don't own Fairy Tail

He'd do anything for her, absolutely anything.

It didn't matter what they were fighting, he'd help fight and defeat the enemy alongside her. It didn't matter what she was going through, he'd be there with a smile to pick her back up and make her laugh. It didn't even matter where they went, even if he had to face transportation via a vehicle, he'd buckle down and try not to embarrass himself by puking all over the floor of the hellish ride he was in.

When he had left, there was still a nagging doubt in his mind about what he was doing. Why couldn't he talk to her about it instead of just sending a crappy letter? But no, he had just pushed those doubts aside and left like he would only be gone on a two-week mission. Then the guild-who he had thought would still be standing when he left-disbanded, leaving Lucy all alone.

Facing that fact had been tough on his part. Despite Lucy's assurances that it had been a mistake and that he shouldn't feel too bad, he knew that he had screwed up, badly. No amount of smiles or reassurances from Lucy's part could undermine his guilt. He swore on that day that he would do everything it took to make it up to her. He wasn't going to leave her alone again; that he promised her on that day. Because he'd do anything for her, isn't that right?

Now, as Natsu looked at her, tears streaming down his face, he wondered how much karma must have hated him to make this happen.

"Lucy..." he whispered in a hushed tone. Could she still hear him? Would his pleads still reach her? "Lucy, please wake up, please."

He scooted closer to her, ignoring the hell that surrounded them. The world was slowly burning around them, yet all he cared about was her, was that so wrong?

Placing his hand in hers, he squeezed so hard he felt for sure that she would feel it. Her hand was still warm after all; doesn't that mean that she's still there too?

"Lucy, come on, I need you to see me kick Zeref's ass so you can tell everyone how cool I was when we get back home."

Still, nothing.

Was this revenge? Some kind of cruel joke played for his amusement? There was no way this could be real, no way that everything could take such a horrible turn so quickly, so unexpectedly.

Yet, there he was, wondering just that.

Natsu slowly released his hand from Lucy's, biting his lip as her hand dropped down limply. Her still form would look peaceful if not for the haunting reality of the situation. Natsu's fists clenched tightly, his entire body shaking as he knelt next to her. Again? Again, unfotunately.

Yes, it was true, he would do anything for her. But everyone had their limits.

And no matter how hard Natsu tried, he just knew, somewhere deep down, that he would never be able to bring Lucy back.

The boy who had promised to do anything for her could now do anything but.

Zeref looked calmly on as Natsu screamed with heartbreaking agony. A satisfied smile crossed his face.

"So, you'll do anything for her, won't you Natsu?"
