It was spring. She remembered that. The cherry blossoms had been in bloom and the petals had swirled in the wind between them like a soft, sweet-smelling, pink snow. His back had been to her, his dark hair shining in the bright glare of the sunlight. His broad shoulders had made her weak just looking at them, even as she'd known that he had not called her here for a romantic rendezvous. He'd come there to say something important, and she remembered a small feeling of dread that had sat like a lump of lead in the bottom of her stomach.

"What is it?" She'd asked him, when he'd been silent for a long time, the wind the only sound she could hear. He had turned around then, and looked at her with those liquid pools of darkness. She'd turned breathless then and there.

"What is it?" She had asked again, her voice just an octave higher, betraying her body's response. That could have been the smallest hint of a smirk at the tip of his mouth, but with him, it was always so hard to tell. She was drawn to this man, anti-social tendencies and all.

"I'm leaving." Was his simple response. She had shifted her head to the side in confusion.

"You mean another mission? If that's all, you didn't have to-" She had started, but he had cut her off.

"No. I'm leaving this village, this place. For good." She remembered that all she had greeted his words with was a blank stare. Time had drawn on for an eternity before she had tilted her head forward, effectively shading her face and teary brown eyes with a curtain of rich borwn hair.

"Alright. I won't stop you. Not like I could, even if I wanted to." Her voice had not wavered, she remembered proudly. He had drawn near, and reached out one hand to cup her chin, lifting her face upward.

"This is not goodbye. I will be back." He then drew her close and pressed his lips to hers in a soft kiss, almost the touch of a tangible illusion. He had then drawn back, and asked her the question that would help to shape her future:

"Wait for me?" She gave him a watery smile, and covered his hand with her own.

"You know I will." He'd almost smiled then, and pressed a second, lingering kiss to her trembling lips. She had clung to him like he was her last link to life, but they had eventually parted, and he had walked away, with her counting every step.

That night, he commited horrible atrocities that were unheard of before in that peaceful village, and altered the fates of many young people, one of them his younger brother. But she ignored it, and the resulting eight years where she had to live with out his breath on the back of her neck. There was not a day he did not enter her mind in some small way.

That was why she stood there, eight years later, under that same tree, which was passed flowering season. It was summer now, and they had both changed. But, she had still waited, and even if his face was blank, she knew he was pleased to find her here. She smiled at him, and held out a hand to him, dwarfewd by his mysterious partner.

"Welcome back...Itachi."
