I only own the plot. The song in this is from 'The Slipper and the Rose'. Composed by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman.

Ok. I know I'm putting two up on the same day, but I have been trying to get this one up for a few days now.

When They Danced

"Sit down Maria, tell me what happened." The Reverend Mother said, motioning her to a chair.

How could she say all that she felt inside? How to explain this confusion she felt? 'Start with the facts.' She told herself, taking a deep breath. 'And stay calm.'

"Well, I was teaching the youngest boy, Kurt, how to dance the Laendler. He was too small for me to dance it with comfort. We were in the middle of an under turn when..."

"Yes?" The Reverend Mother coxed gently.

"When the Captain cut in, we danced the rest of the dance together. During the last moves of the dance our eyes locked. I felt so confused while we danced, it was like...I can't explain it."

"Try."

She took a deep steadying breath, opened her mouth and sang...

"Rainbows raced around the room When he danced with me, Shooting stars began to zoom When he danced with me. In his arms I was ascending, My world became, A magic blending, Of dream and hope and love When he danced with me. Though I know that night was only A fantasy, And I know that night Is all there will ever be. Dancing in his arms forever, My heart will never be free, Dreaming of the night he danced with me."

After she had finished there was a suffocating silence, that is until the Reverend Mother asked...

"Are you in love with him?"

"I don't know. I don't know, I...the Baroness...

Meanwhile the Captain was walking around the ballroom for what must have been the hundredth time since she had left. He was again thinking of Maria, and how right it had felt to have her in his arms. He thought wistfully of the dance they had shared as he sang...

"Rainbows raced around the room When she danced with me, Shooting stars began to zoom When she danced with me. In her arms I was ascending, My world became, A magic blending, Of dream and hope and love When she danced with me. Could it be that night was only A fantasy, Could it be that night Is all there will ever be. Dancing in her arms forever, My heart will never be free, Dreaming of the night she danced with me."

What was he going to do? How could he have proposed to Elsa, when he felt like this for Maria? Maybe it was a good thing she had left when she did. For he was dangerously close to loosing his heart to the woman. The sweet and charmingly beautiful Maria was totally different from Elsa, the over-confident party seeker. How was he going to get out of this mess.

His children needed a mother. Maria had gone back to the abbey and wasn't coming back. He had to marry someone, even if it was only for his children's sake. Elsa wasn't so bad. She would learn to love his children, and visa versa.

He heard music from the patio. He would sort his mind out later. Right now, he had an announcement to make, even though the reaction wouldn't be particularly ecstatic. In time it would all turn out right, or at least, he hoped it would. For better or worse he had made his choice, and would stand by it.

He walked out to the patio and found his children singing to Max and Elsa. But where was the joy in that song he now loved so well?

R&R pls.
