"I thought we were going to ride the horses, Hermione, not feed them," Draco said as he watched his girlfriend bend down and pick up a large armful of hay.
Hermione carried the hay over to the closest horse, Daisy, and put it in her feeding trough. "They need to be fed before we ride them, Draco. How would you like running on an empty stomach?"
"Hermione," Draco whined. "I want to be riding through the fields with the wind in my hair," he said, tossing his head back dramatically. "I don't have time for this!"
She gave an exasperated sigh without looking at him, "You asked to come along today, you know."
"Because you told me it would be fun," he said. "This part isn't fun. The horses smell and it's a lot of work."
Hermione just ignored him as she pet Daisy's snout.
Draco grumbled at being ignored but said nothing more as he grabbed his own armful of hay and carried it over to the horse Hermione had selected for him, Delilah.
They had gotten into a discussion the other day about their childhood summers before Hogwarts and Hermione had mentioned going to her grandparents' farm and riding horses. When Draco had confessed to never having ridden a horse in his life, Hermione had a fun time teasing the rich boy about the one thing she thought all privileged children did. After the teasing, however, and noticing Draco's annoyance but eagerness to learn, Hermione arranged for this trip today.
Meeting her grandparents had been interesting. They had no idea about magic and the name Draco Malfoy had no impact on them except that her grandfather found it pompous and her grandmother chose to call him 'Darcy' instead, which put Hermione into a constant fit of giggles every time.
Draco deposited the hay into Delilah's trough and brushed her soft snout as she ate. He had always wanted to ride a horse but somehow that part of his life had just never happened. His mother used to tell him of her own horse-riding days, which always made him excited. His father just never had an interest, but Draco had an inkling his father was actually scared of the large creatures. An incident in Diagon Alley he remembered when he was eight, involving a horse-drawn carriage and a loud scream was very suggestive.
"Ahh!" Draco released his own scream as Hermione came up behind him and tapped his shoulder.
She laughed and asked, "Is not that bad, is it Darcy?"
He scowled and turned back to Delilah. The calm nature of the horse melted his own irritation, "No it's not." It actually wasn't. The smell of the stables weren't that bad and the horses were so beautiful.
Hermione smiled and reached out to pet Delilah as well. "I know."
After a few minutes just admiring the horse, Hermione dragged his arm and pulled him over to a large pile of straw that was used for the horses' bedding. He was about to ask what she was doing when she smirked and fell back into the straw, pulling him down on top of her.
He grinned and said, "Not that I don't like this, but why are we lying in a large pile of straw? I thought we were going to ride."
Hermione smiled and said, "It'll take at least fifteen minutes before they've finished eating and feel ready to move. We can do something else in that time."
She looked so cute underneath him, with a few stray pieces of straw caught in her hair. Even in the long braid she put it in, it still managed to snag things. Draco reached up and pulled a few pieces out and threw them to the side.
Draco didn't need much more explanation. He said softly, "As you wish, Ms Granger," before capturing her lips.
