A Lost Eternity
A sense of dread came over Matt as he approached the wreck and realized the accident was on the same road Jennifer would have taken to go home. His heart thumped harder and harder as the knots in his stomach just got worse with every step he took. He was still hoping they were wrong. It had to be just a coincidence. Parking a few feet away, he had trouble with his keys because his hands were trembling so badly.
Finally getting out of the confines of the car, he began to approach the chaotic scene before him. He could already tell it was the right make and model car that Jennifer drove, he didn't want to look at the number plate, trying to tell himself it wasn't Jennifer's. Dragging his eyes away from the wreck he could see what happened.
Whoever the driver was, he didn't want to admit it was Jennifer, had been driving down the left side of the road when a drunk driver lost control of his 4x4 in the middle of a curve. The first car had swerved to avoid the other, only to slide across the slick wet road, across the slick double white lines in the center of the road, before slamming into a giant tree on the side of the road. The car was now facing the opposite direction it had been coming, crumpled against the tree, completely caving in the driver's side.
The drunk driver's 4x4 had a giant dint in the side, a blue dint, where it had collided with the other car. he looked at the number plate again and again, hoping his eyes were just playing tricks on him, but still the same blue letters and numbers stared back at him. Victorian plates, NIB-058. They were right, it was Jennifer's car.
He hesitantly approached the side of the car, his whole body shook, a chill ran up his spine as he looked in through the passengers door. The first thing he saw when he looked in was blood matted blonde hair, he just couldn't bring himself to believe any of this. Reaching out he brushed away the hair, the blood was still warm and sticky, and he looked into the pail face of what used to be Jennifer, he gasped at the sudden pain in his chest as his blood ran cold and a chill ran down his spine. He couldn't deny it any longer. They had it right. It was Jen, his Jen.
Closing his eyes in disgust, he had to look away, he couldn't look at the sight before him any longer. For the first time in a very long time, a crime scene was making him sick. A single tear fell down his cheek as he turned around and leaned against the car, he stared into the darkness, just wanting a few moments of peace. He couldn't make his heart and soul understand something his mind couldn't deny any longer. Tears cascaded down his cheek as he shut his eyes. He already felt so very lost without her.
There was a cold and empty feeling that began to settle over him, clinging like a virus.
He couldn't stop the tears from cascading down his cheeks as his fist clenched on its own accord, he didn't register the pain, or the snapping of bones as his fist slammed against the metal of the car. All he remembered was letting out an inhuman cry, frightening the people around him with its intensity, every tear sharpening the pain, ripping his heart into a million tiny pieces as he called a name Jennifer could no longer hear.
