Have Faith
Once in a while, he stayed in her magical shop for a few days.
They would sit on the viewing deck to watch the twilight, the moon and the stars. Or they would go out and revel with the mortals. Sometimes they lingered in the shop to contemplate the consequences of each action and decision.
When he left, it would be abrupt and unexpected. But she always knew thus she was always prepared. He teased her, once, if she could cry for him before he walked out the doors. She replied by kicking him out.
There was no room for sad thoughts or regrets. She believed that there was only room for hope. It was only right that she would act unaffected, undaunted. She was good at it now. They'd decided long ago. So that he can pretend that he'd come back and she'd greet him like so. They didn't want to admit that something had changed.
On one of his visits, he didn't even tease. They bathed under the pale moonlight in silence. She didn't say anything when he reached over to hold her hand. Even when his fingernails left angry red welts on her hand, she didn't let go.
Precious time was slipping away, they knew. The day that must come inched closer and closer. They didn't like the threat that hovered on the edges of their false peace and contentment but they still pretended.
They were prepared and ready. Wheels can be set into motion at any time. Precautions had been set up and back-up plans had been drawn. They can do anything in any situation.
But they didn't want to leave the bittersweet paradise that they lived in.
She couldn't say she was scared. It was bad for her reputation. But she was and he knew. He was frightened, too, but he didn't give it a thought. They would move forward because that's the direction that they chose.
"If it happens and when it starts, have faith," he said, one day in midsummer on one of his random and unexpected visits. She knew his wish but he didn't ask for it. So she didn't mention anything.
"What?" Yuuko the Dimensional Witch said, lifting an eyebrow.
"When it starts, have faith," Clow Reed repeated. "Everything will be all right."
She smiled slightly. "Have faith," she murmured to herself "because everything will be all right."
His immortality rested on those words, she thought. Yuuko looked up at the bright, full moon languidly. She raised a silent toast to Clow and drank. When everything started as promised and predicted, she felt scared but she brushed it away.
Because she believed that everything will be all right.
