Mello bit off a piece of chocolate from the nearly gone bar and held it in his mouth, savoring the sweetness. He watched as Near challenged Matt to a game of chess (an odd occurrence) and as Near beat Matt within a few minuets. "I win." Near's voice was emotionless as he reset the board. "Again?" Mello watched them play five more games, but he was not interested in the outcome. He mostly watched Matt. Matt tried to win every time, but he knew that nobody (except maybe L) could beat Near at chess. Eventually Near got bored of the game and went to a different part of the room.
Matt stood up, looking around. When he saw Mello, he smiled. A crooked half smile that melted Mello's heart like chocolate. Mello attempted to smile back but was too late, Matt had taken out his game boy and sat down in a chair facing the other direction. Mello sighed and went outside.
Four hours later, after all the other children had gone to bed, Mello returned to the warm sitting room. He sat down in a chair next to the hearth (new bar of chocolate in hand) and watched the dying fire. "Did you really stay out there the whole time?" Mello jumped, he had assumed he was the only one in the room. Matt was sitting in the shadows, just beyond the reach of firelight. He moved forward to sit on the hearth rug next to Mello's chair. "Yes, I did, whats it to you?" Matt cocked his head, goggles glinting. "Nothing, I guess..." He paused, then rising to his knees moved even closer to Mello. "May I have some of that? The chocolate?" Mello glared (though he would have given it to him) and put the last piece in his mouth. Matt sighed, hesitated for a fraction of a second, then leaned forward, pressed his lips to Mello's and took the chocolate into his own mouth. "What the-!" Mello broke away from Matt, eyes wide. "If you want it...come and get it back!" Mello's shock subsided and he jumped to his feet. Matt danced away, into the middle of the room. "C'mon!" With a growl, Mello launched himself at Matt, but the boy just stepped backwards, laughing. "You can do better than that! Catch me!" Mello chased Matt all around the room, nearly catching him twice, but each time Matt slipped away. Finally he cornered Matt, where they had started, next to the fireplace. Mello grabbed Matt's shoulders and pushed him against the wall. Matt smiled. "Ooh, did I make you angry?" His breath smelled of the stolen chocolate. Mello growled again and, before Matt could speak, kissed him roughly, pushing him into the wall. It didn't matter that the chocolate was gone, melted long before, the taste still lingered on Matt's tongue. When finally they broke apart, both was panting and blushing bright red. "You really wanted that chocolate, huh?" Matt snorted and stroked the side of Mello's face.
"You are sweeter by far than any chocolate, I would pick you any day." Mello whispered.
Matt smiled that heart melting smile and kissed Mello gently.
