Prologue

Esme was use to having a single mother. It didn't really bother her, because her father left when she was just an egg.

Esme was a good kid growing up. She got along with the other girls and everyone loved being around her. Her teenage years started out great, but when she turned sixteen everything started going down hill. Some girls had picked on her and called her names. She got so tired of it that she punched one of this girls right in the beak. She got kicked out of school for a week. It was from punching that one girl that her whole life changed around. She started stealing from some stores, drinking and cutting herself. All of her friends started leaving her when her attitude changed from being sweet and nice to moody and angry.

Esme even changed her look. She changed her light blonde hair to black with blood red bangs. She switched out her short skirts and high heels to black leather pants and biker boots.

Her mom knew something was wrong. She sensed a change in her daughter ever since she punched that girl at school. Her mother tired to talk to her about it, but no matter what her mother said or did it didn't help.

Esme remembered very well when she met Duke. She decided to go big and stole a diamond wristwatch from a jewelry store and the security guard caught her. She ran out of the store into an ally. She could hear the guard yelling. She was grabbed from behind and pulled into a different ally. She struggled against the hold.

"Keep still, sweetheart."

She didn't know why, but she listened.

As soon as the guard was gone, she was released and she looked at the mallard that saved her.

"Duke."

"Esme."

As soon as they met, Esme and Duke started seeing each other. They started stealing and sleeping together. Her mother had no idea what Esme was doing. Instead of going to school and sleeping at her house, she would be with Duke.

All of her attention was on stealing things and being with Duke.

They both joined 'The Brotherhood of the Blade' and it was only a matter of time before Duke became the leader of the gang. No matter what they stole or who they were partnered with, at the end of the day they would always come back to each other and sleep in their bed.

Duke had a bad tendency to spoil Esme.

He proved it by stealing a gold necklace with five real diamonds and giving it to her.

They both received scars from being in the gang, but that didn't stop them.

Falcone was the reason Esme left the gang. Falcone planned on telling her mother everything that Esme had done.

She had to leave the gang, but she didn't want to leave Duke. He was her whole world. She told Duke what Falcone planned on doing. It broke Duke's heart, but he did what was best for her.

Esme walked away from 'The Brotherhood of the Blade' and her first love that day. She started changing her life around and each day that passed her life got better.
