AN: The thought just occurred to me today, I hope it's somewhat of a new look at this scene. I hope you enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters from Doctor Who
Blindsided
The Doctor leaned against one of the pillars inside the TARDIS; it felt so utterly empty now; despite Donna's excited rambling. He'd sent his friends back home, finding that each of them had either someone to return to or the will to find their place without him. He couldn't blame them, wouldn't blame any of them.
It was true what Davros had said, unintentional or not the people he loved and valued had become warriors. Defenders of the Earth every last one. The Doctor hadn't meant for it to happen, but he was so proud of them. They were just humans, piddly little humans; and yet they had stood up against the Dalek Armada and said 'No!' They had shown no fear, his humans never ceased to amaze him.
The Doctor raised his head to see Donna's smiling face she was right at the top of the list! Donna Noble, 'Best temp in Chiswick.' His hearts swelled with pride at just the thought of her, she was so perfectly determined; and at the exact same time she truly felt there was nothing special about her. She was a shining star to him. For one moment in time she had been the most important woman in the entire universe!
So why hadn't he seen this coming? Donna's head shook as she began repeating the same word. The entire universe had been working towards this moment, even the Ood had felt it. So why had he been left so blind? At each turn there were new possibilities opening and closing. So many it felt at times like his head would explode. But he'd never seen this. He'd never caught a glimpse of the DoctorDonna.
The Doctor knew he was speaking to Donna, but he didn't want to consider his words, the broken look on Donna's face said it all as he stepped towards her.
"I want to stay... "
He wanted her to stay. Oh how he'd enjoyed showing Donna the wonders of the universe!
"I was gonna be with you; forever."
Nothing last forever he didn't want to tell her that, didn't want to believe it himself. But as much as it hurt he knew the truth, and had to keep going.
"Don't make me go back, Doctor. Please, please don't make me go back."
He was saving her life, this one last time while they were together and knew each other more deeply than anyone could. She had his mind in her head; she had given life to a human version of himself. Donna Noble had given Rose Tyler the life he couldn't.
"No, no, no, please, please no, no, no...NO! "
Gift after gift, Donna had given to himself and to the entire universe, and it was going to cause her death. She deserved so much more, but all he could do for her was erase himself from her life.
The Doctor held her limp body tightly against him blinking back tears, and thought for just a moment that he could hear the song of the Ood, the song that would forever sing the praise of the DoctorDonna.
"If only you could hear..." he whispered into Donna's ear.
