She lay down and took it. It was useless fighting back, when she did it
only got worse. Last time it had been a week before she could hide the
bruises enough to leave the house. So at first she took the pain and the
abuse because she knew it could be worse.
She tried running away once. She was hitchhiking about three miles out of town when he caught up with her. He dragged her into the car and once home beat her then locked her in the basement. She should have gone to hospital after that but he knew there would be an investigation if he did. That would ruin his image and that couldn't happen. So he hired in a doctor who knew how to keep his mouth shut.
He was always so apologetic after. Said how he hated doing it but didn't she see that he had to, that she made him? That she made him so angry when she wasn't a proper wife, that she should know by now how he likes his food cooked, know not to interrupt the football on tv. He told her he was teaching her because he loved her.
And as time passed she believed it. She could see he got no joy from hurting her. How he cried after as he said he was sorry. That he loved her. If he didn't love her he wouldn't have chased after her, wouldn't have got the doctor (who had come many times since.) He was right, she should know these things. It was her fault, she deserved it. She was lucky to have him really, this man who cared about her enough to try and make her better. He was doing what was right.
She felt herself get stronger. She could lift heavier loads, was more useful around the house. She never had to ask him to open jars for hr anymore because they were no longer a problem. She was more use to him. Perhaps now she could fight back. But it would be wrong to. He cared about her, he loved her. So she lay down and took it.

A/N Yes, this is harsh. And no I don't agree with abuse in any form. But sadly some people do believe they deserve it. The idea of the story was to see what would happen if a potential (late) got the power but was this suppressed. Would it make a difference? This is just one way it could turn out. I prefer the other. That they realise they can stop it. But when they have this belief then they may not be able to.
It sounds obvious but if anyone knows of abuse try to help. Report it, intervene, whatever is suitable. Maybe just be a friend. And if you are abused get out of it. Whatever they say it's not because they love you. It's because they want power and control. No matter how much you love them their life is NOT worth more than yours. There are people out there who can help. Start with the police and go from there. Good luck.
