My whole life my father insisted we live on the water. He convinced my mother to uproot her whole life, marry him, and move to a small secluded beachside home in Florida. There I was born along with my younger sister Mia.
I know what you're thinking, sand and water all day, but you'd be wrong. My father loved how the beach looked, but he was terrified of it.
"When I was younger my father took me to the beach and let me out to swim. I swam back into a riptide and nearly drowned."
The weird thing about the story was how often it changed. Occasionally it was a riptide, other days he got a cramp... the end result was always the same- we weren't allowed in the water.
But like every child will, I once chose a night to defy my father's wishes and sneak into the water, and that is how my fairytale began.
"Come on Tessa, let's go for a midnight swim"
He was everything a teenage girl could hope for, dark brown hair and piercing green eyes. We had been dating ever since the beginning of Junior year.
I looked first at him then into the water. The ocean didn't scare me, but my father had a way of finding things out, and I did not need him upset with me only a few weeks before graduation.
Jason didn't wait for my response. He kissed me lightly on the lips then stripped down to his boxers.
"I'll be waiting for you to join me"
He didn't have to ask twice. I took off my tank top and jeans slowly and followed him to the water. That was the first time I felt it, the wind whispering by my ears as though it was trying to tell me something. I pulled up my light blonde hair in a bun carelessly on my head and I wade slowly into the water.
We both walked far enough in to completely emerge ourselves.
"On the count of 3..."
I dunked under the water and almost immediately felt my body getting sucked in deeper. I couldn't swim, I closed my eyes only to realize I had lost all feeling's in my legs and then I screamed. I was under the water, screaming at the top of my lungs, and breathing as though I was lost in a park. It was at that moment I chose down to look at my legs, only my legs weren't there anymore.
It would have been the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen had I not been in such a panic. The bottom half of my body was a long deep purple fin that sparkled in the moonlight that was hitting the water.
My eyes widened and the last thing I remember was a flash of light and a warm hand grabbing hold of my right forearm.
