1925, Maycomb County, Alabama
The weather was still, the evening just like any other day at this time. Louise Finch was absentmindedly sitting on the porch steps, watching her three year old son pull loose his shoe laces, then attempt to retie them. The sky had turned inky blue and a cool breeze whistled occasionally and rattled the porch lights. The mother smiled without thought as the child babbled out "Mama" and her arms reached around his shoulders as she sighed in content.
Few neighbors walked this way at night and the ones that did nodded in her direction but the reason for sitting out was not for fine weather or social greetings, but waiting for her husband.
"Good night, ma'am Finch," Calpurnia stepped out the front door, "Left Mr. Finch's supper on the table, best he get home soon, don't wanna git it too cold, ma'am,"
"Yes Cal, good night," Louise turned to smile at her as Calpurnia walked around the two of them and rubbed the little boy's head.
"Good night, Jem," Her voice raised to a playful scolding and Jem acknowledged his name and laughed, waving to Calpurnia. The darkness was enough so that Calpurnia had disappeared from her sight within a few steps and Louise focused her attention to the other direction again.
"Lovely night to be staying out?" That familiar deep voice rang and both husband and wife smiled in realization of each other's company. Atticus took a seat on the porch steps, next to Jem and he put his hand on his head and Jem turned.
"Evening, son," He softly murmured.
"Attacus!" The word formed in Jeremy Finch's mouth. The father furrowed his eyebrows, prompting a laugh erupting in the twenty eight year old wife.
"I don't think he will ever start calling you Father," Louise placed kisses on her son.
"Love, I believe this is your fault" Atticus placed his briefcase on the floor next to him.
Their joking ways ended when Jem yawned and Atticus looked at his watch, Louise carried him up, "Time for bed, handsome,"
She turned to stare at Atticus and he seemed to realize she wanted him to remain seated on the porch. She did return for him and scooted closer to her husband, leaning her head against his shoulders.
"Atticus," She whispered with a tremble in her excited voice, "Do you remember when we met?"
"When my brother forced me to bring you along because he didn't want to be alone with Maudie?" Atticus seemed serious.
"No, it was at your office when I was trying to apply for a job as your secretary, and then you told me," She smiled, closing her eyes, "You told me that you weren't in need of a secretary, you were in need for and you never told me, you just trailed off," She looked at Atticus, seemingly demanding an answer.
"Everything's just, just so perfect," She smiled, taking Atticus by his chin and leaned in, her nose on his.
"Forget about the rules, give your wife a kiss,"
"I can't quite forget rules, love, I am a lawyer," Atticus pecked on her once on the lips.
Satisfied, she returned to her former position.
"Honey," She closed her eyes, the wind blowing her dark brown hair on her face.
"We're having a baby,"
And then her eyes opened to see Atticus's two eyes, behind those glasses, and his arms wrapped around her and then he kissed her. He kissed her again and again.
"Another baby," He contemplated it, and he turned around again to see his wife. She nodded, the smile refusing to drop.
"Well, she better not call me Atticus," And Maycomb's own attorney laughed out loud, wrapping an arm around his wife.
