Worth It
Dave Strider was at work in the coffee shop just down the street from his house. Just 7 minutes, just 7 minutes, until he got to go home. He didn't make too much at his job, but it was enough to be able to buy little things here and there for John and their two adopted daughters whom he and John both loved to death, Kelsey and Rebekka. John was a grade-two teacher at the local elementary school, bringing in most of the household income.
It was 4 minutes now. Merely four minutes until Dave could go home. He strongly hated his job, but couldn't cuss to really say how he felt because he had two twin 4-year-olds at home and John made him stop the bad habit so the girls wouldn't repeat it.
It was 2 minutes now, but a group of 4 teenage girls came up. Screw John. Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck!
"Hi, can I help you?" Dave's voice was monotone and slightly irritated, but the girls were too busy oogling over him to notice.
"Oh, um, I'll have.. A medium hot chocolate." A blonde giggled flirtatiously. Dave rolled his eyes behind his shades.
"A tall cappuccino, no whipped cream." A brunette winked.
"We'll just have two slices of your pumpkin bread," Another brunette said.
"Please!" A pink-haired girl added.
"$7.50, please." The girls who ordered drinks just stared at Dave.
The pink-haired girl rolled her eyes before pulling her wallet out of her back pocket and presenting Dave with a ten dollar bill. "Sorry about them," She apologized. Dave handed the girl back $2.50.
"Haha, no problem," Dave smirked. "Alright, Chasz will have that up for you right over there. Thanks, guys!" He added enthusiastically sarcastic. The girl laughed and pushed her friends to the other counter to wait for their drinks.
"Lucky witch! You talked to him!" A girl said. "Shut up, he was just being friendly. Good God, you guys." He heard her reply. Dave looked at the clock. 5:07. He could go! 7 minutes ago he could've gone. "'K Chasz, I'm leaving!"
"Have a nice weekend!" But the cool young man was already halfway down the block in a sprint.
Approaching their house, Dave slowed down to catch his breath. He turned the key in the lock, opened the door, and grabbed his girls after hearing a scream of, "DADDY!"
"There are my princesses!" He grinned as he spun them in circles.
"Hey now, Daddy, two little princesses just had snacks. We don't want them getting sick." A young man dressed in all blue leaned against the door frame, smiling at his family in the living room. Dave kissed Bekka's cheek and Kelsey's forehead and placed the giggling girls on the couch with a, "Love you," and a turn in the man's direction.
"Hello," John beamed as Dave wrapped his arms around his waist and wrapped his own arms around Dave's neck. Dave kissed John and moved them into the kitchen (never breaking the lip-lock, mind you) where he pushed his husband against the fridge and finally pulled away.
"I love you," Dave nuzzled John.
"I love you, too," John smiled a small smile up at the cool man. "I always will, you know."
And that was when Dave Strider finally just didn't care about his job anymore, because in the end, he came home to a wonderful family and it was completely worth it.
