Clark focused on Lana's house trying to see where she was. He moved the telescope to her window, then the porch.

"See anything interesting?"

Clark turned around, startled.
"Lana. What are you doing here?

"I dunno, I was out for a jog and I ended up here I guess."

"Oh. Well, to answer your question, nothing's more interesting than you."

Lana blushed and smiled. A weird feeling came over her whenever she went near Clark. It was like her heart dropped 2 feet to the ground and she felt light-headed. What was it about him that did this to her?

"You okay?" Lana's head quickly jerked up.
"Oh, sorry, I guess I just zoned out for a minute."
"Don't worry about it."

Both of them stared at the ground and an uneasy silence filled the air.

"So..." They both said at the same time. They both laughed.

Clark smiled, "You first."
Lana laughed, "Well to tell you the truth, I really had nothing to say, I was just trying to make conversation."

The two looked at each other, smiling, and Clark immediately looked down.

What was it about Lana that made him go so crazy? Maybe it was her beauty, her personality, her kindness. Whatever it was, it made Clark constantly wanting more. He knew this was love. It might be unrequited love, but it was love none the less.

"What were you gonna say?"
"Oh, nothing. Just trying to make conversation too."

Another awkward silence passed over them.

"You know, Whitney's leaving for college in a couple weeks."
"Oh, I bet your gonna miss him."
"I dunno. I've been wrestling with myself for so long about Whitney. I mean, he's a great guy and all."

Clark's face scrunched up as she said that. He hid it quickly, but Lana caught a glimpse of it.

"But... I don't think it's been working out... for a while."
"Oh."

Lana could tell that Whitney brought up tension between Clark and her, and decided to change the subject. The two spent an hour talking about things they had never told other people before. The connection they felt with each other was indescribable.

Lana looked at her watch and stood up from her chair.

"Thanks for everything Clark. I think I'd better get home. Whitney usually calls around 10 and I don't want him to worry."

"So he keeps tabs on you."

"Yeah. And it's starting to get REALLY tiring, but hey." Lana said with a sad smile.

"Why are you still with him? Whitney I mean."

"I dunno. I used to feel safe with him, but now, I'm not so sure. Bye Clark, it was fun. Let's do this again sometime."

"Bye Lana. I'll look forward to it."

They both stared at each other once again. Lana smiled and slowly turned around to walk out. When she reached the first step, Clark's quiet voice stopped her.

"I can keep you safe." He said, barely over a whisper, as he stared at the ground.
Lana turned around slowly, not know if she was supposed to hear it or not. She look at him as he lifted his head.
"What was that Clark?"
"I said, I can keep you safe Lana. I love you."
Lana looked at Clark, who stared back with his innocent eyes.

They stood there staring into each other's eyes, as if time had stopped. They were both looking into each other's souls, trying to see what they were thinking.

Clark saw Lana's eyes water and immediately looked away.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't said anything." He said, ashamed. He didn't notice her walk to him, and looked up to see Lana's face inches from his own.

She lifted up his chin slowly and leaned in. As their lips met, a feeling of shock ran through their bodies. Clark put his arms around her waist and pulled her closer and Lana put her arm around his neck.

They seemed stuck in time until they each relunctantly pulled away.

"I love you too Clark." With that she was enveloped into Clark's body, and for the first time, she felt totally, completely safe.
