Smiles and black roses
Remus Lupin and Nymphodora Tonks sat opposite each other in the kitchen of Grimmauld Place. There was no one else in the house and it was totally silent. On the table stood a single black rose in one of the old Black's vases. Both stared at a point behind the other so they didn't cross their eyes. Both were also thinking, thinking about the same thing in a different way.
Lupin considered what Molly had told him a few hours ago. How Tonks was sad about her cousin's death, but even more depressed about the fact that he, Lupin, didn't respond to her in a way she wanted. She loved him, not just love, but deep love that couldn't disappear. And he, he loved her too, also deep however, mostly unaware. Still they could never be together. According to Molly, they could, but Lupin thought differently of it. He was a werewolf, and no one, no one would or could ever marry to something like that. It was too dangerous, too unlikely and for him an impossible dream.
Tonks thought about how Molly had reassured her that Lupin loved her too. However, he looked so distant to her. She loved him so much, but would he ever love her too, to her it seemed unreal and a faraway dream. Then there was the fact that Sirius had just died too. Somehow, she felt guilty for feeling so in love with Lupin while he had passed away only a little while ago. Molly told her it didn't matter, that it was good to go on with her life and start may be a new thing. If only he wanted to start with her too.
Then at the same moment, both of them looked up. Their eyes met exactly over the black rose and they smiled to each other. Precisely then the rose opened its petals and they knew that had Sirius blessing even though both were still unsure about what the future would bring them.
