They are a family. A dysfunctional, fucked up family. With Jack playing daddy and husband and guardian. Yes, guardian is an excellent way to describe Jack Harkness. He is their guardian, with Owen playing the part of wilful arrogant son who, although he'd deny it to his dying day, really wants nothing more than daddy's approval and to be just-like-Him. Which would make Gwen the wife. But she doesn't com fist, she's looking else where for her kicks and happiness. So perhaps she's more like the ex-wife who sticks around because she still loves Owen and Toshiko and wants to stay: for them, so she can care for them. Inato's definitely the lover. But just like any newly divorced parent's lover; Ianto is ignored and resented and shoved aside for the good of 'the children'. Toshiko is more like Jack's sister. He looks out for her, the way good older brother's do, and he accepts that she has her own life, her own feelings, and coping methods. Rather than order her around he cajoles her into is way of thinking with a warm smile and a compliment.

Dysfunctional, the lot of them.

But they are not a family, not really. No blood or legal bonds to keep them from falling apart and leaving. Ianto keeps secrets that risk their lives, they all betray him at least once if not twice, then Owen dies, Gwen gets (re!)married and Jack, although he no longer loves her romantically, is afraid she'll leave and he really doesn't want that. Besides, it feels like giving up and he can count on one hand how many times he's given up. Devastation comes with dire consequences when Owen and Tosh die, forcing the ex-wife, the young lover, and the guardian together. Now they have to be together, otherwise they'll be alone.

Comment please. Don't be mean, please, it's just a little drabble that came to me.
