She doesn't want to be Empress, but she can't seem to bring herself to untangle her limbs from Kaddar and slip back into her clothes. Kadar senses her stirring; he nuzzles into her neck.

She tenses at the affection. "I'm sorry, I should go."

His arm tightens around her, drawing her back into the warm curve of his body. "Please, Daine. Stay."

In a few years, Kaddar will be Emperor. In a few weeks, she'll go back to Tortall. Still, she lets him kiss her, kisses him back, and lets herself pretend that they were not doomed before they started.
