"Ow! Get these bloody things off of me!" Lily cried tossing her heels to the side.

"Lily, are you alright?" It was James. He had come to Petunia's wedding as her date, but she had not seen him in the past hour.

"Yes, I just can't handle these damn shoes." Frustrated tears fell from her eyes and James knew it was something more than a painful pair of shoes.

He leaned against the wall, watching her battle with her choice of footwear. He thought this was all rather funny. "I can't stand it. Why does my sister insist that I wear such ridiculous shoes when I'm not even- not part of the wedding." There was the problem. Lily was angry with her sister. "She can't honestly blame me for being a witch!"

"Your sister is an idiot." James said to her.

"Don't insult her at her own wedding!" Lily placed a hand over her mouth. "Sorry, reflex."

Then an idea came to James. "Let's go, Lils."

"I can't just leave in the middle of the wedding..."

"We'll be back soon, I just thought of something that will make you feel better." He held out his hand and she looked at it apprehensively for a moment before taking it.

"If we're not back by-"

"We will be." Then he was running and pulling her along with him. He took her down the stairs and they ran down the streets, her red hair flying in all directions. James couldn't help, but speculate that with her gold dress she was the epitome of Gryffindor pride.

"James, my feet..." He paused for a moment, glancing down at her bare feet.

"Oh, damn, sorry I didn't realize." He slipped off his own shoes and held them out. Lily took them gratefully.

Then he yanked her hand and they were running again. It was a sight. He was in a muggle suit and socks while she was in a tight gold dress and oversized men's dress shoes that she was continuously tripping over. But he was so intent on his course and she was laughing gleefully that they didn't even notice people staring.

James abruptly stopped on a small wooden bridge overlooking a river.

"Couldn't we have apparated?" Lily asked with a grin.

"I guess so, to be quite honest I didn't really think of that..." James trailed off and began to watch Lily. She was leaning over the railing, her dress shimmering in the moonlight, he took in a breath, she looked dazzling.

"So what are we doing here?" She tucked a lock of red hair behind her ear.

"Say anything about your sister."

"I don't-"

"I'm not daft Lily. Go on, get out your anger."

"She just married a cow."

James choked out a laugh. "Carry on."

"I never realized she had such horrendous taste." Lily took a deep breath and sat atop the railing. "She's so jealous of me and it's ridiculous! She's a nightmare, but her head's too far up her own ass to realize!"

"Lily, you cussed..." James said.

"And?"

"Nothing...you just never curse."

"I'm angry, alright?" Lily rolled her eyes. "She thinks she's all high and mighty and we're only here to kiss the ground under her feet."

Then he laughed and so did she. She threw her hands up and tilted her head back and then proceeded to, gracefully, fall into the river.

When they returned to the wedding Lily was soaked and Petunia reprimanded her for it.

"So far up her ass." James mouthed and Lily laughed again.
