"Common! I just don't get it, give it up already!" Nathan Scott muttered annoyed with the prospect of tackling another word problem. He'd rather be back in bed, curled up in his comfy sheets with about 2 more hours until school began. He honestly didn't see why Haley bothered making them meet so early, let alone "that" early in the morning.
"Just look, this problem is fairly easy, it's just a review of what we've all learned but haven't practiced in years. It's completely natural that you don't get it. You're just rusty." Haley replied rolling her eyes.
Sometimes she wondered why she even put up with him. She wasn't stupid by any means. She knew what he was playing at, using her to get to Lucas. The only thing she didn't seem to grasp was why she bothered to help in a situation where she would eventually get hurt. Sure Nathan said he wouldn't tell Lucas, but ultimately he would, after all it was inevitable with those two butting heads. She supposed she was just a sucker.
Nathan never needed help before in "any" of his subjects. In fact, he was one of those people she had always envied. Never having to study and still getting that perfect score. So he wasn't fooling her one bit, and that made her frustration ten times more brutal. She supposed what Karen said really had struck a cord, and going with her gut feeling might have been for the best. Maybe Nathan Scott behind that entire façade: the self-absorbed, ego driven basketball hotshot one. He might just be a good guy.
It had been a couple of weeks since they had begun their twice a week ritual. Nathan would bring the breakfast and books, and Haley her literature and math gear, ready to help. At first it had been awkward, but as time progressed, they had become comfortable with each other. Sure subjects like Nathan's father Dan, Lucas, Basketball and Peyton were off limits, but every thing else was subject to discussion. A hesitant friendship had begun to bloom.
After going over the problem with Nathan, Haley glanced at her watch. "Well that's it, we should get going or we'll be late for school."
"Sure, and we wouldn't want Haley being late now would we." Nathan smirked earning a serious glare from Haley.
Throwing his hands up in surrender he chuckled, "Common Hales I'll give you a ride."
"Don't call me that, you know only my close friends call me that.'
"Yeah, but I thought we were friends." He said well playfully swinging an arm around her shoulders. She batted him away and gave him another glare.
"In your dreams buddy, not even close."
"We're just going to have to work on that." He replied lunging for her hat, successfully capturing it, leaving her hair in tangles.
"Nice look, common."
"HEY!" she watched as he bolted towards the car with her trailing after him. Swinging the car door open he got in well Haley pouted. Shaking her head she ran her hand through her hair trying to get it out of her face. Sliding in beside him she glanced at him and frowned.
"You know you're such a dork."
"No I'm drop dead gorgeous, but anyway." He laughed.
Haley secretly smiled to herself; though he was a jerk most of the times, this is what gave her hope. Knowing at that sometimes he could be normal, that he could be a nice guy. She was looking forward to seeing where this went, though she still couldn't let go of the truth. That one day Luke would find out, and this would end.badly.
