The Totally Confused Life of Lulu Collins
Lulu Collins was the type of girl who woke up in the morning gorgeous. That was just the way she was. Some people had brains. Some people had charisma, some humor… some beauty. To Lulu, you couldn't have it all, so when she looked in the mirror, or at any magazine for that matter, she was glad that she was good-looking, and not anything unimportant like intelligence or responsibility. Her best friend Nikki Howard told her that she was incredibly shallow, but that didn't bother her. Ever since Nikki had that accident, she was acting really strange. It confused Lulu at first, but then again, it wasn't hard to confuse Lulu. There were a lot of changes in Nikki, but Lulu saw a real problem when Nikki missed her mani-pedi appointment. Nikki and Lulu always had a mani-pedi every Saturday at Eun Mi's Nail Spa. Nikki and Lulu got the best spot of the day with Eun Mi herself, and Eun Mi only came out of the back room twice a day. Once at lunchtime to snag the biggest cup of kimchi, and again to work on Nikki and Lulu. This was an unwritten law with Lulu and Nikki. Saturday mani-pedis were mandatory; this law was never to be broken. Nevertheless, Lulu was Nikki's best friend, and best friends were supposed to understand each other, right? Oh well, thought Lulu. Her brain was beginning to hurt, and she had a feeling that the cute blonde guy in the corner was staring at her. But, this was expected. Lulu's philosophy was that every boy in the world was a little bit in love with her, even if he didn't act like it. She knew how to turn on the charm without looking anxious. It was one of the few 'special' gifts she had. When it came to talent, Lulu ran a little short. Sure, her dad was the director of a bunch of famous movies, such as Journey Quest, but had she ever been in any of them? Had she aver even been asked for a callback? No, the answer was definitely not. She had been to multiple castings for parts in movies. Every time, she expected to get the part, but every time, her dad would come to her and tell her that the role wasn't right for her this time, or that she would get it next time, or even that he was totally for her, but the rest of the casting crew disagreed. Typical dad, always trying to please her. But, at least she wasn't like Nikki, who barely even talks about her childhood, let alone her dad. It must have been rough being Nikki. With all that raw talent bubbling up inside her, just screaming to be set free. Lulu imagined Nikki as a young girl with braces and pigtails playing in the mud with her brother. Lulu now knew that Nikki would never play in the mud now. For a minute, Lulu remembered the story of how Nikki was discovered. Just standing at the easy-mart one day, when out of nowhere, a fancy business lady steps into view asking if there was a payphone anywhere, because her car had broken down. After a hard stare, the lady got a spark in her eye and asked Nikki if she would be interested in modeling. The rest, you could say, went down in history. For a moment, a thought crossed Lulu's mind. Had Nikki been robbed of her childhood? After all, she was just a young girl when she was whisked away to be a full-time model. That was a lot of stress to put on a teenager. But, just as fast as the thought came, it was gone. After all, it wasn't hard to confuse Lulu…
