FOR HIS BOYS

Dean stood, knees locked against a persistent tremble. A glance up and over showed his brother mirroring his stance. They both stared morosely at the paper-wrapped box on the table. A message "Open only if I'm dead, ya idjits!" was scrawled messily across the paper.
"Should…" Dean paused. "Should we open it?"
Sam swallowed but didn't answer.
Dean scrubbed a hand down his face, studiously ignoring the fact that his cheeks were damp. "Sam?"
"N-no." Sam backed away a few steps. "Not n-now. I'm not ready."
Dean rubbed the back of his neck, cleared his throat. "Y-yeah. Neither am I."
