"So Coulson mentioned it's your birthday next week," Ward began, sitting himself down next to May at the bar.

"As if I need reminding," she muttered in reply, staring straight down at her glass of amber liquor, turning the glass in her hand.

Ward sighed and pulled the bottle towards him, pouring himself a drink.

"You don't want to do anything? I mean I know we can't exactly do much on the BUS-"

"No," May interrupted, a sharp tone to her voice, "I don't want to do anything," she said firmly. Ward raised an eyebrow,

"Why not?" Ward ventured. May breathed heavily, finishing her drink in one swig before speaking again.

"It makes me feel…old," she replied softly, barely being able to admit it to herself, much less to him. She didn't want her age to be a factor in their…whatever they were, but having this day brought up was like a flashing reminder of something that was usually never an issue, but now she couldn't seem to shake it. May slid off the stool and sat down gently on the lounge. Ward followed, seating himself beside her.

"You think that matters?" He asked, barely believing what he was hearing, they had never brought up their age difference, but it wasn't an issue for him and he'd assumed it wasn't for her either. May continued to stare at her hands,

"It's not exactly something I'm happy about." Ward got up to kneel in front of her, they weren't exactly together, he knew that. But it didn't stop him wanting to reassure her. To let her know what she was to him, even if he hadn't quite figured that out himself.

"Listen to me, I know you don't exactly like making things personal, or bringing in affection to our relationship but…" He broke off, searching for the right words.

"Honestly? To me you're perfect, more than that, you're enigmatic. And I know that sounds corny and probably not what you wanted to hear-" She cut him off by kissing him. Gently, different from the other times where she wanted an escape. But this, him saying those things to her, gave her something she didn't know she needed. Melinda usually wouldn't allow this, these rare moments of romanticism. But maybe this time, she could make an exception.
