Happy Campers

Vern knew he wasn't awake because he was scared. Why the hell should he be scared – Chris Chambers was on guard and everything in the forest was afraid of Chris Chambers. He figures it's the coupling of the crackling fire and the rustle of Gordie leaving his sleeping bag and the faint whispers and that unfamiliar sound of crying that brought him awake. Well, whatever it was, it was quiet now and even the coyotes were silent.

Teddy was fast asleep, his glasses lying askew a few feet away as he twitched strangely in sleep. Vern was pretty sure Gordie was still awake but he hadn't heard his friend return to bed yet.

"Gordie?" Vern whispered, hoping not to wake Teddy. This would get chaotic if his slightly unhinged friend was accidentally awakened. Night or day, Teddy would make everything bigger than it should be.

Not hearing an answer, Vern perked his head up to look in the general direction of Gordie's sleeping bag and seeing it empty, turned to the lookout tree. What he saw made him both unpleasantly surprised and afraid because anything out in the darkness to get them would surely strike now at a time of lowered guard.

The pistol lay inches away, in such a position that left the wielder open to any outside attack. Chris had his hands on Gordie's shoulders, their mouths pressed together so fiercely that breathing was out of the question. They were surprisingly quiet, despite Gordie's struggles to stay sitting upright without fighting against this display of midnight affection. Even those dumb romance movies paled in comparison to this. Vern watched with his mouth agape, unsure to either turn and pretend he saw nothing or scream.

Being a distance away, the preoccupied two didn't notice when Vern violently turned at a movement. Teddy had awakened of his own accord. The latter rubbed his eyes before fumbling for his glasses. "Verno. Why so awake?" Vern's expression must have given everything away, the shock, the midnight experimentation, the personal realization ('cept, of course, it wasn't his), that Teddy turned dully at the tree before staring blankly at the two, who had finally broken apart, yet not noticing they were being watched between breaths.

"Hey, ya faggots! Either keep a lookout or get a room." Teddy yawned as if the sight was the most normal thing to watch in the world, before turning over to get comfortable again. Vern's glances switched double time from Teddy to Chris and Gordie, the former running one hand through his nearly shaving head and reaching for the gun again, the latter flushing a brilliant red to rival his shirt.

"Thanks for the tip," Chris called sarcastically, giving Gordie a reassuring pat on the back and a, "Go back to sleep." This finality signaled the end of all discussion of the matter, a sort of 'don't-ask-don't-tell' kind of thing. They were all sure to forget the incident in the morning and Vern settled back down, one pubescent crisis solved.

End.

Note: Thank you me for ruining another ordinary movie. Review please!
