Cold. So cold.

That was the only tangible thing: my only thought. Except for Jack's hand on mine. If I didn't have Jack to hold on to, I know I would have been dead by now.

I felt my eyes drooping, yearning for sleep. Ever so slowly, they closed, the image of my beautiful Jack frozen into my retinas. We would go together, in peace. We would be together, beautiful and young, for eternity.

"Rose! ROSE!"

A faint voice in the back round of the beautiful calm. Sort of irritating, really. If the voice wasn't so beautiful, I would have ignored it. But it was calling for me, so with the effort of a thousand men, my eyes opened.

"Rose! Stay with me! We're going to make it out of here!" Jack's face contorted with worry. I grasped his hand as tight as I could, and let my eyes close once more. "I love you, Rose, I will never let you go. Stay awake, you have to, the boats are almost here, they've got to be!"

The sleepiness disappeared. Boats. We would make it out of here, alive and well, if not a little hypothermic. We were stranded here on a little barrel, both of us clinging on for dear life, hoping and praying.

"HELLO! IS ANYONE ALIVE OUT THERE?"

My voice came out as a rasp. "HELP US! HELP!" It wasn't doing any good. Jack tried… our throats were frozen.

But the man with the whistle! We had to swim to get the whistle… "Come on, Jack, the whistle."

We let go of the barrel and cold crept into my chest and my body sunk lower into the water. The sleepiness slunk back into my eyes, and slowly, I started to drift.

There was a loud whistle noise. It was the loudest thing that I had ever heard… Jack grasped my hand, just as my head had started to submerge. He pulled us toward the boat amidst all the frozen bodies that speckled the water. Their vacant, dead faces, the babies, despratly clinging to their mothers, long gone, the couples, the priest, clinging to his bible… his Salvation had come.

I was pulled into the boat, only vaguely aware of my surroundings. Jack kissed me full on the mouth and shouted-rasped, "WE MADE IT, ROSE!"

I pulled him closer, and that's how we stayed for the rest of the night… together forever.
