Chapter 1
I lay in Pete's bed, sheets wrapped around me, a lit cigarette resting between my fingers. I watched him pace up and down the room talking hurriedly into the phone, a proper businessman, constantly troubled by his day to day work affairs. He was gorgeous, thirty-something, with short dark hair, dark eyes, and sharp features. I lifted my knees to my chest and held them there, stubbing out the cigarette I no longer wanted in the ashtray by the bed.
'Ok, I'll see to that later then. Bye,' Pete said into the phone, hanging up and flinging it away so that it landed with a soft thump on the sheets. He sighed and scratched his head before sitting down on a mahogany antique chair in the corner of the room.
'What the fuck am I doing?'
He directed this question towards me, but the tone of it suggested that he didn't expect an answer.
'I think you should go now,' he continued, 'I've got stuff to do and Mel will be back soon.'
'Alright then,' I answered, reaching for my clothes, that were sitting haphazardly beside the bed.
'Kai - ' he began, and then sighed.
'What is it?' I asked, pulling up my jeans.
And then, out of nowhere, he burst into tears.
'Jesus Christ,' I grumbled, assembling the rest of my outfit and walking over to him.
'I don't know what the fuck is going on with me! Mel is going to leave me… she knows… She's going to leave me-'
'Listen, Pete,' I sighed, squatting down so that his heavy head faced mine, 'I think you should stop calling me for a while. Leave it. I don't think I'm helping.'
'You're right. Fucking hell, I'm sorry I got you involved in this. Here, buy yourself a dress or something. That's my apology. I won't contact you again, I promise.'
He reached into his pocket and handed me a £100 note. I shrugged and took the money. Then I kissed his hand.
'Bye, Pete.'
