Thanks for sticking with me everybody! You're all so supportive and awesome! And now, on to the story!

It was John's job to drop Dean off at school every morning.

He and Mary brought their son in together on the first day, stood among the other proud and nervous parents watching their kids venture forth into the waiting arms of primary education.

After that first day however, it was John's responsibility to ensure Dean got to school on time.

Every morning he would get his energetic four-year old up out of bed, dressed, breakfasted and off to school. He would listen to Dean's chatter during the ten-minute drive and have his arm nearly yanked of as his boy jumped up and down on the way into the building. The worst, most heart-wrenching moment, however, the one that had him seriously considering trying to con Mary out of her sleep-in time, was when he left Dean in the classroom and walked away. Dean, his Deano, his bright, energetic, happy boy, would stare up at him with tears in his expressive green eyes, tears that never fell, and slowly, reluctantly, let go of his hand. "Bye Daddy" he would whisper, and his eyes would beg John to stay, not to leave him behind. And John, stifling every paternal urge he had screaming at him to run to his boy, scoop him up and carry him home, would smile and say "bye Deano, have fun at school okay bud?" and, after the whispered "okay Daddy," he would turn around, ignoring Dean's gaze burning a hole in his back, and walk away. And he most certainly did NOT shed a few tears in the safety of the Impala on the way to work.

After an agonizing week and half of this, John was ready to risk Mary's sarcasm and wittiness. But then something changed.

Dean started talking non-stop about a boy at school, Daryl, and, one day, when John was, bringing him to his classroom and bracing himself for what was to come, Dean surprised him. As soon as they were in view of the dreaded tear-causing room, Dean bounded in enthusiastically, hanging up his army green coat and Spiderman backpack before turning to a very stunned John.

"Bye Dad!" He said brightly.

"Bye Dean" stuttered his shocked father.

"Have a good day at work Daddy!"

Dean dashed away towards another little boy, not even hearing his dad's whispered "okay Dean." John turned away slowly, turning back for one last glance of his boy.

He was...happy.

He was...proud.

And the steering wheel of the Impala was certainly NOT slick with his tears on the way to work that day.
