When you're a kid, the world is colourful. Everything is bright and pretty; blacks and dark colours are non-existent. There's no right or wrong, simply your own opinion and view on the matter. It's like something's been pulled over your eyes, designed to keep you blind to the truth and to prevent that childish innocence from fading.
You see the world through eyes that only see the good of people – you can't imagine anyone doing anything wrong. Your mind is always producing positive thoughts, and the word 'evil' isn't in your vocabulary, unless you're speaking about the way your vegetables tasted.
Children possess a kind of innocence that can't be tarnished, nor taken away, even when someone does wrong against them. Everything is the way you imagine it, everything is the way you wanted it to be. You love and admire your siblings – they are perfect in your eyes.
You spend nearly every waking moment dreaming, fantasizing about something that you hope to have or be when you're an adult. The walls of your mind are a blinding white; the memories that you hold dear never far from your thoughts.
Children have imaginations that no adult can really comprehend – the world as they see it has boundless opportunities, limitless time. There are no secrets within your past, and there are no shadows to shy away from within your mind. You have no understanding of just how cruel humans and life can be. All you've ever known is good, and understanding. You've never seen true reality.
As I child, I dreamed and hoped to live a life free of the responsibilities that came with being the heir of the Ishtar clan. My duty was to wait around for an ancient pharaoh to return to the earth – and I knew it would be in vain. Such things did not exist.
And so, I began to drift away from my responsibilities as a tombkeeper. I wanted to forget I had ever had an initiation carved into my back, and I wanted to live my life, not the one my family had planned for me.
I treaded a path that would lead to my realization, and the changing of myself. It was then that I understood what my true destiny was to be – and I began to understand that being a child is something you only ever experience once.
Most people don't appreciate being young until their life has receded to nothing, and they've seen everything the world has to offer.
It's then you realize that you only get one chance.
