"Renee, I hate to ask you to do this. But she's not getting better." Charlie said, his voice a whisper. He felt the need to speak quietly, even though his daughter was up in her room, too lost in her own thoughts to hear him.
"I really hoped it wouldn't come to this." Renee said back, her voice not hiding the sobs she was trying so desperately to keep from her ex-husband. "I'll be there as soon as possible." She hung up the phone and Charlie put the reciever back. He climbed the stairs slowly, listening for any sounds that Bella was moving around. There were none. He hadn't expected change, but he would always hope. 'I could kill him.' He thought brutally, his hatred for Edward Cullen burning stronger. He had laughed at himself the first time he thought this, the night Sam Uley had found her, because he was so angry at a teenager. It had been a week now and there was no change. He felt he was within his rights to rip off the boy's head. He never would because he'd never see him again, but if that jerk ever stepped foot into his home... Well, he knew the laws and he knew ways around them. He knocked softly on Bella's door. She didn't say anything. He opened the door and saw her lying on the bed, looking pale and sad. If he couldn't see her chest rise and fall as she breathed in and out, he would have thought she had died. He didn't step into the room. "Bella, your mother's coming to see you." He said, hoping this might get a reaction out of her. She didn't even blink. He retreated, closing the door behind him. Heading back down to the kitchen, he got there just in time for the phone to ring. He grumbled slightly, picking it up. "Hello?" he said in his gruff, Chief Swan voice. "Calm down officer. It's just me." Billy's voice came through the reciever. "How is she?" he asked before Charlie could muster a reply. He didn't need to ask who 'she' was. "No change." Charlie muttered, not feeling up to saying more. Billy just "hmm"-ed. "Jake's worried about her too." he added. Charlie didn't like his tone of voice. He wasn't going to stand for it if Billy tried to get them together. This heartbreak she was feeling made him wonder if she would ever be with anyone else. He hoped not. "Later Billy." he said, hanging up before his friend could reply. "Hurry up Renee." he muttered to himself.
~*~ Renee arrived later that night, Phil in tow. She hugged Charlie breifly, taking in the sad look in his eye. "We're gonna fix this." she assured him. Charlie led Phil to the kitchen and Renee accended the stairs. She opened Bella's door and saw her daughter in bed, the quilt up to her chin, staring at the wall. It pained her to see the hurt and abandonment on her only child's face. Was this boy really so important? She went to the closet and pulled out Bella's suitcase, beginning to put her clothes from the dress into it. Bella didn't make a noise. She went to her side, kneeling next to her. "Bella, sweetie, you're gonna come home with me and Phil." she said, pushing her brown hair of of her eyes. Bella looked at her and opened her mouth to speak. "No." she said, her voice hoarse. It was hard to listen to. Renee stood back up, putting more clothes in the case. "No!" Bella hollered, sitting up. Renee gave her a shocked look. She had never told her no before. Bella pulled the clothes out of the suitcase, throwing them all over the room. "I'm not leaving!" she yelled at her mother, tears breaking through. Charlie had said she never cried before, so maybe this was a break-through. Bella continued to throw things, angry tears running down her face. "I won't go!" she cried again and again. Renee grabbed her, hugging her tightly, pulling her back onto the bed.
"We won't make you." she whispered, smoothing her hair. Bella's fear ebbed till silent tears streaked down her face. "You don't have to."
