Chapter 1

Fallenpaw sighed. Her denmate, Jaypaw, shifted beside her in his nest. "Hey, Fallenpaw, it's time to train!" Rainbowwing, her mentor as well as the Clan deputy, called into the apprentice's den.

Hailcloud came in and prodded Jaypaw, followed by Nightsoul. "Come on, Rockpaw, you lazy lump," she muttered. "Okay, okay," Rockpaw complained. "I'm coming." Once outside, Fallenpaw felt better. "What's today's training going to be?" she asked her mentor. The ruddy she-cat replied, "Battle training."

Jaypaw bounced up. "Great! I love battle training!" Fallenpaw giggled. Jaypaw always made her laugh.

Nightsoul rolled her bi-colored eyes. Her red eye gleamed. "Oh, come on. we're burning daylight," she complained.

Jaypaw was not thrown off by the she-cat's bad temper. "Come; let's go to the Training Hollow," Rainbowwing instructed. Fallenpaw and Jaypaw walked side by side after their mentors. "So," asked Jaypaw, "How is being the leader's daughter, and your mentor's sister?" Fallenpaw sighed. "Pretty stressful," she admitted slowly. Jaypaw nodded, his eyes closing. "I find it hard to be the son of a monster," he murmered. Fallenpaw recalled the horrible story of how Jayfeather rose up to power, his mind bent on destroying RainClan.

"Hurry up!" Nightsoul called from up ahead of them. Jaypaw and Fallenpaw quickened their paces until they had caught up with the moody queen.

Once at the Training Hollow, Rainbowwing crouched. "We're learining some advanced moves today," she said. "The leap and claw, and the Undertwist." She demonstreted the Leap and Claw, and then the complicated Undertwist.

"Like this; you jump under your opponent's belly, then twist around. After that, lunge for your opponent's side or belly. If it is a matter of life and death, then you lunge for the throat."

Fallenpaw carefully noted her mentor's words, but before she could copy it...

"FOX!"
