An attempt to become "official", but it fails.
Here's to the beginning of the 30 Day RelationSHIT Challenge.
All will be SoMa and canonverse unless stated otherwise; if it's crack then it will have "cracked up crack" somewhere up top and in the tags. I'll also try to keep it at minimal sad eater and angst eater because my longer fics have enough of those. Let me know if you want to see anything specific on any of the days because I'm open to ideas. Without further ado~
When Soul first realized his growing crush for his partner, he couldn't help but wonder: Is this what all those movies were talking about?
He'd never tell anyone about his chick flick guilty pleasures, especially Maka (who was the one who chose those films in the first place), but is this what a crush is supposed to feel like? His heart seemed to race uncontrollably when they were alone with each other and his stomach clenched when she laughed without a care in the world. His cheeks would flare when she invaded his space and he found himself much more aware of himself when she was near, but he wasn't complaining. It felt nice to be around her, even with the butterflies that formed in his stomach. Soul's feelings probably weren't love, but maybe they could be later on.
As he walked to meet her and their friends for lunch, he couldn't help but to wonder if he should confess his feelings to her. That was how it worked in the movies anyway, the girl would have a crush on the most popular guy in school and then by some miracle they would be together by the end of the movie. That or she would be stolen away by her childhood best guy friend. Soul shuddered at the thought of BlackStar and Maka becoming a couple but quickly snuffed it. They saw each other as siblings even more than real siblings saw each other, there was no way there would be any romance budding for their current relationship.
Soul and Maka however... They'd only been partners for a few years and they had lost their ninety-nine kishin souls only a few months ago. If Maka saw him as a brother rather than as a close friend, she made no distinction between them.
He walked a little faster, knowing that Maka would be waiting at their usual table in the cafeteria. That is, until he saw her usual pigtails just around the corner, tucked away with another boy.
His heart almost stopped at the sight of them, his feet certainly did. Now that he was paying attention, there was an increase of whispers coming from all around them.
"- can't believe Ken would actually-"
"No freaking way he's actually going to-"
"Oh shit, there's no reason why she'd say no!"
"Shh, is that her weapon there?"
"I guess he'd be looking for a new-"
"- they would make the cutest couple-"
Ken? and Maka? No. No way. No way in Hell.
A few slow steps later, and he positioned himself against a locker closer to where Ken and Maka stood. As he fiddled with the lock, he listened into their conversation. It wasn't like he was eavesdropping, he was just looking out for his partner.
Maka's voice was the first to speak. "- mean, it's not like you're a bad person, Ken-"
"Well, I am a pretty good meister, too."
"Right. Anyway, I'm not looking for a relationship right now. I'm sorry and it was sweet of you to ask me out, but my answer is no."
Soul transformed his finger and started to pick at the lock, using any excuse to stay longer. Did Maka just say that she wasn't looking for a relationship? It was a great thing that he didn't confess then. However, he heard almost a layer of meaning in her words.
"But why? I think you're pretty and that you're a great girl, why won't you go out with me?"
Soul bit back his tongue and gripped the lock tighter, but Maka's next words hit a nerve in him and made him want to hold her closer.
"Don't think that any of that makes you entitled to me. Just because I'm attractive to you, it doesn't mean that you have the right to treat me that way." Ken sputtered out a quick apology but Maka continued without missing a beat. "I'm flattered by your feelings, really, but I went through something earlier and I'm not ready to be in a relationship. Now if you'll excuse me-"
"No, that doesn't explain a thing-"
Any other words became lost as Soul emerged from the corner. His finger was still transformed and he made sure to give Ken a good look at it. "You weren't at the table, is this guy bothering you, Maka?"
She stepped to his side and took his hand, tracing his blade with her gloved finger. He caught her eye, and shifted it back into flesh. "No, we're done here." They left together, leaving a slightly pink but enraged meister behind them.
As they walked in silence, Soul felt a small wave of sadness coming from Maka. Her parent's divorce was still fresh on her mind. It was a mistake to be so inconsiderate of her feelings, one that Soul almost made. He sighed and pulled her hand closer to him.
"Wanna share a burger and fries? I kinda want lasagna, though."
"Choose one, Soul. But I guess we can split both."
The smile on her face still made his cheeks flare and being close to her still gave him butterflies, but now wasn't the time to let a silly crush ruin her day.
Maybe one day...
