ARMA SEGRETA Rufio is seen leaving a meeting with the condottiere and returning to the Vatican only to be trailed by a cloaked stranger. On the heels of the betrayal afoot, Alexander visits Cardinal Adriano, still imprisoned, and their discussion leads him to believe that Cardinal Adriano was framed by Cardinal Sforza. Testing the waters, Alexander demands that Ascanio reopen the investigation. Sensing that he is under suspicion, Ascanio complies and immediately finds Rufio to try to release himself from their deal. Surprisingly, Rufio agrees, but assures Ascanio that he cannot control Della Rovere's own mission. Ascanio appears to have his own plans to thwart Della Rovere. A cousin from the Borgia family, Pedro-Luis visits the Vatican and Alexander is eager to use him as an ally for their cause. Cesare continues to build the Italian army, and despite his own resistance, pushes Lucrezia to wed Alfonso D'Este of Ferrara for the additional resources he needs. He promises the alliance will not jeopardize their relationship, and to cheer her, he sends for Leonardo Da Vinci. Da Vinci designs a very small ornate weapon for Lucrezia as a gift. Meanwhile Cesare works with Da Vinci to have extensive maps drawn of the next areas of conquest before Naples, to give him an advantage in prowess for what he lacks in manpower. Cesare greets Pedro-Luis eagerly, but in secret is leery of his sudden presence. Alexander visits Vanozza but she turns away his advances. But when he shows affection to Louise and Giovanni, Vanozza decides to voice her concerns about their own children. Cardinal Sforza seeks out Della Rovere and requests the release of his family, on the basis that he has done all that has been asked for Cardinal Todeschini. But Della Rovere is not as lenient as Rufio, and refuses. After attending a banquet hosted by Cordoba with Pedro, Cesare secures support of Spanish troops to add to the Italian army. Pedro questions the integrity of Cordoba, but Cesare insists it is secure. On their return to Rome, the Borgia cousins sense they are being followed and Cesare stops to find the tail. The cloaked stranger from the outset emerges, drawing his sword and they spar, albeit with no fatal blows. Cesare gains the advantage and while holding the other at sword point he uncloaks him – to reveal Micheletto.
