Fawkes was going to be the savior. He was going to swoop in, his tail feathers billowing, and save the day. All he had to do was poke the damn snake's eyes out.
Except—
The snake was beautiful.
Instead of swooping in and poking the basilisk's eyes out, Fawkes could only hover there for a moment, finding himself wishing that he didn't have to do this. Why should he be the one to injure it? Just because Dumbledore told him to?
No, he couldn't do it.
Fawkes was about to turn around, just leave the scene, not be a part of the battle, but then he saw Harry laying on the ground, bleeding out. He couldn't just leave him there.
There was regret weighing down his heart, but Fawkes still turned back to the basilisk and flew closer.
I'm sorry, he thought as he perched himself on the basilisk's head.
Fawkes didn't look into its eyes, only at its scales, but he knew that they were probably like two moons, big and beautiful, and oh so far away. He could never look at them.
Fawkes hated what he had to do, but he still lowered his beak into the basilisk's eyes.
He hated its horrible cry.
