AN: I heard this song on the Twilight playlist and it just spoke to me. I know that's a corny thing to say, but this song is just so beautiful, and it fit with any idea I've been wanting to try for so long. If Bella had gone to Jacob instead of back to Edward. if she had been happy and moved on.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters or the song.

She placed the baby in the crib gently, watching as she stirred and stared up at her with open eyes. Bella shushed her softly, feeling that incomprehensible love for her all over again. She had been a mother only a short two months, and yet she found herself mourning how fast the baby was growing already. She smiled wistfully as the baby blinked owlishly at her from eyes of dark chocolate.

"Come on Cristina, time for sleep." Bella murmured, touching her head softly.

Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are

I never will be far away

It had been four years since Edward had left, leaving her devastated and inconsolable, but Jacob had been there, her sun in an endless night. They had been married only a year ago, and it had been so long since she had seen Edward, but on night's like this, when she sang her daughter to sleep, she found her mind wandering to him.

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
The water's dark and deep
Inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me

She wondered if he thought of her, where ever he was. If he still cared for her, if he had found joy with someone else as she had. Jacob came in and placed his hands on her shoulders, and the couple stood watching as their daughter slept peacefully before exiting the room quietly.

Lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu
lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu

At the window, Edward watched in the shadows, torn by the discovery of the life she had gained after he had left, the way things were meant to be. He always watched her, just to make sure that she was safe. And when the baby had been born, he had become a guardian for her too. Slowly he sang the last verse to himself, mourning what could have been.

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on...
They never die
That's how you
And I
Will be
