Haven
Prologue: Entering the Ark
"Let us in, please!" Leo slammed his fist loudly against the large iron door yet again, his eyes gleaming with barely surprised rage. "It's Leo Beiderman! Please, let us in!" But his voice was drowned out by the hundreds of others that mingled outside the Ark's unbreakable door, all sharing the same goal, all with the same ambition, to enter the safety of the Ark.
"Leo," Sarah said quietly, her arms wrapped tightly around her baby sister, "I- I don't think they're going to let us in."
"They have to!" There were angry tears in his eyes now and she watched them fall and leave clean trails down his dusty cheeks. "They- they have to, Sarah. They can't just leave us out here!"
He suddenly understood how all these reckless people around him felt as they slammed their bodies fruitlessly against that cursed door, only adding more bruises to their steadily growing collection. He looked to the sky, spotting the comet almost immediately. It was crazy how something so beautiful could end life as he knew it, that something that seemed near impossible was so suddenly thrust upon them, giving them no time to take action... or at least to save the entire American population. He felt bad for Sarah, having to leave her parents behind in that valley. He still had his parents... or at least they were still alive. Considering his position at that moment in time, he wasn't sure he would ever see them again.
He noticed someone moving through the crowd towards them and he realized, with a relieved sigh that it was an American soldier. No one else seemed to notice him though as they continued their folly attempts to break down the indestructible door.
"Leo Beiderman? I'm looking for a Leo Beiderman!"
"We're here!" He began to wave his arms, but it was pointless due to his small stature. "We're right here! Here! Oh please, God, let him see me..."
After a few confusing moments, the soldier spotted Leo and began making his way through the panicked crowd. Overhead, the comet made a significant advancement towards the earth and many people stopped to watch in horror as it continued to fall. The soldier grimaced at it.
"Your father raised ten kinds of hell in there, kid. You're lucky. Now let's get you inside." He began to push his way through the crowd back the way he came, and after grabbing Sarah's shacking hand, followed him. It was not easy moving through a crowd of this specific nature. It reminded Leo of an ant trying to release itself from a particularly nasty spider web, as the spider its self made its slow decent, the crowd being the web and the comet being the spider. They stopped at a door on the side of the hill that was obviously supposed to be secret and waited for the soldier to type a code. The door opened with a hiss and they followed the soldier across the threshold and into the Ark, where they observed every detail with awed wonder.
A/N: I'm sorry this is so short but I wanted to get it out before I went on vacation. And it IS a prologue, so don't worry, all the other chapters will be longer. I'm really, REALLY, excited about this fic, so expect fluent updates. Until next time! Cheers!
