Dark

Firestar liked it best when it was dark, when night had finally descended over the clans' home. It was comforting, the darkness. Reflecting the stars to him so brightly. And not just the stars, but the blackness in between. And portraying with great accuracy, the darkness he felt dwelled within himself.

The aging warrior lay down on his back across the grassy hill near the edge of the territory, close to Windclan's border. He didn't doubt that there was some sort of darkness inside his heart, there was in every cat. And of all cats . . . He should know.

Because, even though he'd known it was there, he hadn't shied away from the darkness. Not once. Turn his back to it, yes. He'd had to, for the good of his clan. And he couldn't bring himself to regret it. Just as he couldn't regret wanting to be the only one to touch the darkness that had been inside Tigerclaw.

Tigerclaw . . . Aloud, the Thunderclan leader always called him Tigerstar. But in his mind, never. He didn't want to remember the broad shouldered tom as he had been as the Shadowclan leader. A murderer. A traitor. And so . . . So full of hate.

He wanted to remember Tigerclaw as he had known him before that. The cat that would laugh quietly, when no other cat was around them. The cat who hid a smile deep in his amber eyes. The cat who had silently twined his tail with his as they watched Silverstream die. And the cat who had admitted that his hate for half-blood, and kittypets, came from the vague memories of his father, and what Pinestar had done to his clan.

He could understand, for that matter, why he'd gone after Bluestar like he had. Because in his eyes, she was the same as Pinestar. He'd never told Firestar, but the Thunderclan leader knew now. He knew that Tigerclaw had figured out the secret the Bluestar had coveted her whole life. Of her own half-clan kit's on the other side of the river.

And Tigerclaw had been right, in wanting something better for his clan, even if he'd gone about it the wrong way. And Firestar . . . For all the world, he wished he could have taken back the day he'd called Tigerclaw a traitor. The hurt, and fury in the other tom's eyes. It would linger in his mind forever, side by side with the blood spilling out of the powerful cat as he lost every last life, right at the Thunderclan leader's paws.

Firestar reached up a paw towards the star flecked sky, stretching it out as far as he could. But not towards the stars. No, never towards the stars. So cold, and so . . . Uncaring, about even the most important things. Like lost clans, misguided faith, and unconditional, pure, heart-tearing, love.

Instead, he reached out towards the dark spots between the stars, emerald eyes glazed. "That's where you walk . . . Isn't it," he whispered. "I wonder how long I will have to walk through the stars to find a way there. But I'm willing . . . To walk forever, if that's what it takes." He laughed softly, sadly. "Because, you promised me a forever once. And you know what? It didn't last as long as I would have thought forever should take. So walking forever to find you again . . . I think I can do it."
