When the freshmen bus arrived, it created a bit of a stir at Sky High. A group of seniors sat up in anticipation as the door slid open but others simply went about their usual first day of school jitters. To the left of the massive wide steps up to the school, a group of sophomores twittered in eagerness to begin but several glanced to the bus.
A mousy girl stepped down first from the bus, her hair bound in a long braid down her back. She blinked in the warm August sun and wrapped her arms around her waist, looking mildly terrified. The seniors grinned wolfishly until a beefy hand fell on her shoulder and she stepped aside to let a massive suntanned boy out of the bus. He was two heads taller than her with black hair and friendly almond eyes.
"No worries, Suse," he said reassuringly as the girl glanced nervously up at him. "I'll keep you safe, but I don't think you need it." She nodded and he moved her off to the side as the other students flowed from the bus. Some were dressed outrageously, others plainly, and still others undecided in style or form. They emptied out entirely, the standard gothic/loner children straggling at the back. These kids looked around the campus with unmasked awe before they replaced it quickly with a near identical scowl. Moving as a near cohesive group, the freshmen crossed the campus, sticking close to one another out of near fear. The seniors watched lazily, giving the distinct impression of a wolf pack scouting prey.
Of the sophomores on the steps, a small African American boy appraised the freshmen and nudged a pale boy with fluorescent hair. "Look! Freshies!"
His pale friend chuckled but a girl sitting next to him smacked his arm. "Ethan, you just like saying that because now you're not the freshie."
The boy with fluorescent hair rolled his eyes, draping an arm across the girl's shoulders. "Oh, come on Maj! Ethan's got every right to what with the swirlies he endured last year. Just as long as you don't dish any out, man!"
He playfully nudged Ethan and smiled wickedly as he turned his attention back to the freshmen.
Atop the steps, a girl had stopped to survey the surroundings, staring at the cloud scape that had formed. There was nothing truly remarkable about this girl except for a random pink braid woven into her ponytail. She stared for a moment before one of her friends called out to her.
"Evey! We're going to be late!" The girl called Evey turned and cringed slightly before rejoining the group. As the freshmen entered the building, it was an unofficial signal that a new year at Sky High had begun.
New chapters hopefully soon to follow. Reviews are greatly appreciated.
