AU: ATF – thanks Mog!
Summary/Notes: Ezra gets a little confused and ends up in the emergency room.
The nurses in the emergency room were startled when a hand slapped down on the counter. They looked up to see a brown haired man with a bloody face and clutching a thick book.
"They killed it!" whispered the battered man in a harsh voice. He pitifully held out the book and they could read the title. It was an English dictionary.
Spots of blood marred the blue cloth binding of the book.
The more experienced of the two nurses edged closer. "Are you all right, sir? Who are you talking about?"
The green eyed man pulled a crumpled newspaper article out of his coat pocket. The caption of the picture indicated it was Judge Orin Travis and Mrs. Evie Travis at the opera.
The unsteady man squinted at the picture. "Wrong one," he muttered to himself. He pulled out his wallet and dug out a family type photo of a group of men. They were all wearing black body armor and big smiles.
He pointed to the group. "They did it! They killed the English language!"
"What's your name?" asked the older nurse as she motioned for the other nurse to get some help.
"Ezra. Can you help it? I have some of those awful Ding Dongs that I stole from Mr. Tanner." He pulled a pack of the snack out of his back pocket. It was almost flat.
"Uh, no, thanks. Maybe you need to sit down," the nurse said soothingly as she looked for help.
"I can't sit down. It needs help."
The nurse nodded understandingly, "Sure, all right. We'll get it some help."
"Ezra!"
The nurse looked up to see a tall man with a mustache rushing toward them. "Sir? Sir, can I help you?"
Before she could continue, Buck raced around the desk. He skidded around the divider and sighed with relief at the sight of Ezra.
"Hoss, you had me worried. We sent for an ambulance and then you disappeared."
Ezra raised his eyes from the book to see Buck Wilmington. "Mr. Larabee said to go to the hospital."
Buck chuckled fondly and patted Ezra's shoulder. "He didn't mean by yourself, Hoss. How in the world did you get here? You didn't drive did ya?"
Ezra frowned, trying to remember how he arrived at the emergency room.
"What's this?" asked Buck as he tugged on the dictionary.
"No! It needs help. Y'all tried to kill it."
Buck's puzzled gaze met the nurse's. The nurse gave a half smile. "He seems to think the guys in that picture tried to kill the dictionary. Wants a doctor to look at it."
Buck chortled after he glanced at the picture in Ezra's hand. "That's a picture of our team." He sniggered. "We had a fight in a library an hour ago and ol' Ez here disappeared on us. I'll call our boss as soon as he gets looked at."
"And the dictionary," added Ezra.
Buck grinned at his dazed friend. "Sure, we'll get the dictionary looked at."
