This must be some evil prank, Severus Snape thought as he walked toward the Potter's house. It would not be true! He was sure of it.

But as he opened the front door, or basically just walked in as there really wasn't a front door left, he was greeted by an eerie feeling. The feeling of Death.

Snape had felt this before, as he had witnessed many die in his past. Even as he walked throughout the main level of the house, he couldn't bring himself to face the truth. He knew it was wrong, but he was hoping and praying the Dark Lord had only taken the lives of Lily Evans (Potter) husband and child. He had requested the Lord leave her alone, and begged for Albus Dumbledore to protect her, and her family.

Death had definitely happened in this house though, so Snape continued to search.

He finished with the main level, having found no bodies, so he made his way slowly to the stairs leading up to the bedrooms. After only a few steps up, he found something that made his heart stop, and his breath caught in his throat.

James Potter, dead, but a peaceful glow over his face.

He stopped where he was, the death overwhelming him. Even though the two had not gotten along very well at school, Snape still felt remorse for him, for he himself had been the one to cause it.

Snape was about to turn around and leave, when he suddenly remembered the reason for visiting this house. Lily.

He started up the stairs again, passing James, but not looking at his face or body. No one mattered anymore to Snape, except Lily, and he was determined to find her alive.

Snape knew that if James was dead, then her next person she'd do anything for was her son, Harry Potter. He whipped away the thought that he was once the person Lily Evans would die for, and headed for the room he knew to be the nursery.

As he neared the room, he heard the baby crying. But no one was comforting him; no other living beings seemed to be in the house except Harry and Snape.

Still, Snape continued, still hoping, even though the evidence was strong against his theory. Even though he saw her sweet face lying at the foot of the crib, the same glow that James had.

He walked slowly into the room, and finally let the truth wash over him. Snape silently slid down the wall in agony, tears of pain and grief cascading down his cheeks, onto the floor.

"… Lily …"

Snape had never cried like this before, never shown his emotions.

He crawled to Lily's side, and took her small, fragile body into his arms. The tears kept coming as he held her against his chest, rocking her. Harry watched them, still crying also, but not understanding the strange events.

" … I'm … sorry …" Snape whispered, but it was too late now. "I … love … you … "
