Spoilers for episode 12-10 of Grey's Anatomy airing February 18, 2016. Thanks to Lovemesomeowen for the super quick beta-read.
Owen bounds through the front door, full of energy. He loves coming home to Cristina, to the house they chose together.
"Hey!" Cristina calls out to him. He goes into the living room, where she's reading on the couch. He kisses her before sitting next to her.
"I hate bed rest," she tells him frankly, her hands resting on her pregnant belly.
"You hate the idea of having toxemia," he reminds her, before rubbing her leg. "Can I get you anything?"
"Nope." Cristina pauses before pulling out a piece of paper. She hesitates, before handing it to him. "I ... started writing down baby names. I thought we could maybe have an idea of what names we like ..."
"Oh, great." Owen eagerly begins to read her suggestions. He raises his eyebrows. "These are all cardio surgeons. Christiaan or Barnard, Margaret or Allen ..."
"Not all of them."
Owen's smile fades at one name. Megan.
Cristina gently touches his hand. "If you want to ..."
He shakes his head and looks away.
"I didn't mean to upset you." Cristina's voice is low and soothing. "I just ... wanted to let you know that you could honor her ..."
Owen remains silent.
"I'm sorry." She slips her slender hand into his. They quietly sit together for a few minutes.
He swallows. "I can't imagine anyone else with that name."
"Okay."
"I miss her so much."
"I know."
Gently, he squeezes her hand. "Thank you for thinking of her."
"Are you going to be all right?"
Owen looks at her then and nods.
She sees the pain in his eyes, the same hurt that always bubbles to the surface when his sister is mentioned. The same way she feels when she thinks about her father.
She thinks back to a day on Dr Wyatt's couch.
Owen was struggling for words. That wasn't new. Cristina smiled at him supportively. Talking about the choking was a start. She could see the healing that happened when Owen used his words and she was going to see him through all of it.
"It's okay, Owen," Dr Wyatt said. "Take your time."
"I..." Owen sighed, heavily.
The gruffness in his voice made Cristina's smile fade. She rubbed his shoulder, sensing that something big was about to be revealed. Perhaps he was going to talk about the ambush. Or the best and the worst surgery again. Or this soldier named Dan who Owen seemed reluctant to remember. He was one big hot mess of emotion and she couldn't breathe without him.
"I had a sister," Owen spat out, looking at the floor.
Surprised, Cristina could only blink. Then she rubbed his shoulder again. Dr Wyatt carefully observed Owen.
"Her name was Megan." He talked then, about the sister he loved so deeply. Instead of ugliness, his words were beautiful. By the time he was done talking, they were both in tears.
"I should make supper," Owen says, bringing Cristina back to the present. "I was thinking about lasagne?"
"I would like that." She grips his hand. "I think the baby's last name should be Hunt."
He raises his eyebrows.
"I can't stand hyphenated names," Cristina informs him. "You're the one who has been wanting a family for so long. I think you should share your family name with our child."
Owen smiles then, genuinely. "Thank you."
"And how confusing would it be to have two brilliant cardio-thoracic surgeons named Dr Yang?" Cristina continues. "Think of the chaos when one of us wins an award and we both show up to accept!"
He laughs, the tension leaving his body. Wrapping his arms around Cristina, he pulls her close. "I have no doubt that our child will make their own mark in medicine."
"I agree."
Owen buries his face in her hair. "I like our home," he says. "I like us."
"We're awesome."
