Darkness engulfed him once more, his lingering shallow breaths were gasping, clinging to the light that surrounded him. Merging colours swirled around him, he knew they were once shapes that had meaning to him, yet now they all merged together in a myriad of colour. All that was in focus was the feel of pain and death calling his name.
Though, one sensation held him, one image sharp amongst the chaos. His weak eyelids quivered wide open and he could make out clear shapes; a dark beautiful eye, soft golden skin and another eye, a smooth cheek and plump lips that quivered above him. He thought he heard her whispering words to him. A prayer perhaps.
Emotion swelled within him, tearing at his mind and he would have screamed if he had the capacity. Scream that he would not leave, but that the struggle was too much to bear. Shutting his eyes to the beauty of life around him, he waited. Waited for the pain to end, for the struggle to cease and for the roaring in his ears to stop.
Beneath his pain he felt her holding him, supporting his body, cradling it against hers. Felt her hand brush his hair, felt her chin against his forehead as she whispered her prayer for him. Fever burned inside, bursting to escape and threatening to tear his body apart as it did. Struggling now, writhing against her touch, against the link to the world around him. That the pain would stop and he could fly free.
Then water dripped against his eyelid, a lone droplet that gathered in the crease below his eye, and then poured down his cheek. Opening his eyes once more he looked up at her face, so close, and saw the liquid in her eyes. More tears fell against his face and all pain faded into the distance, nothing existed except the moment of this beautiful being casting tears for him. Light glimmered in the droplets that clung to her eyelashes, reflecting the light above. He focused up to the pitch black depths of her pupils. He looked deep into the void held within them, saw her soul merged with his as the universe birthed itself so long ago and knew there would be no separation between them.
