Chapter 1-Ebony.

Ebony Chase closed her eyes and sighed, the breath of wind that was piping through the jagged gaps in the bark of the tree raising hairs and giving her goosebumps wherever it's chilly touch went.

She squinted as the suns rays cast a blinding light through her eyelids turning her vision red, she peeked through her lashes and peered out at the world. Well, the world that was visible through the cracks that she had ripped into the bark of the hollow tree.

She still remembered the day she had finished them, standing triumphantly while her cracked and broken nails dripped blood showily onto the dusty floor.

She smiled at the memory, then stood up and stretched her muscles stiff and aching from the night she had spent curled up in the trees hollow. She looked out at the world from her tiny windows and scanned to see if there was any Peacekeepers around the tree-the past few days and nights they had been patrolling awfully close to her tree and she definitely did not like it.

Ebony lifted up the loose piece of bark and wriggled through it like an eel, a few lonely strands of her ebony black hair after which she had been named had got caught in the rough bark. She cursed silently and yanked them free, the pain brought her out of her dream like state and she remembered the gut wrenching pang of hunger.

To try and draw her mind away from the hunger she thought of Tiger, her fierce friend with strange golden eyes and tan skin with a head full of closely coiled curls that sprang back into place no matter what. Rain or shine.

Tiger was the governors son and the pair of them made unlikely friends. He lived a rich life and always had food to eat, whereas her on the other hand was beyond dirt poor.

Ebony got up and looked around, the meadow looked picturesque with daisies popping up all around at random, a familiar figure appeared at the other end of the meadow. She smiled at the familiar brown face and golden eyes.

"Tiger!" She said,pleasantly surprised.

"Ebony." he replied, his voice warm and fluid-like honey a smile teasing the corners of his wide brown mouth.

"How'd you find me?" Ebony asked,"how long have you been here?"

"I had a hunch, and I really only just got here." He hesitated as I fell into step next to him "Also, I brought you a little something!" He held up a bulging bag that steamed slightly in the early sunlight.

I contemplated the bag for a moment and then fell upon it ravenously, pausing only to sit on the slightly damp grass and then continued to rip open the bag.

A range of muffins, breads and fruits spilled out onto the grass and my eyes widened. This would be enough food to feed me for weeks!

I looked over at Tiger, unable to express my gratitude and found myself staring into his unreadable golden eyes and he stared.

The silence in the meadow was unbearable and was only broken by two strange silver winged birds that flashed through the clearing.

Tiger's eyes broke away and followed the birds flight with his golden eyes, his dark curls bounced past his ears.

"Mockingjays." He whispered.
