AN: While discussing a prompt that a friend of my accepted from a livejournal community that she's a part of; I couldn't get this idea out of my head. I hope you enjoy!

I'd like to thank Faceted_mind for offering feedback that helped flesh out this little story.

Never Trust Luck

Sam knew better than to trust the Winchester's luck.

Luck didn't exist. Not in the world Sam saw.

Had luck saved Dean three years ago when his heart was going to give out? No. It hadn't been a matter of faith either; Dean's time had merely been swapped for someone else's.

Was it luck that brought Dean back into his dying body when the Reaper had been hunting for his soul? No. John had given his life in place of Dean's.

Two lives lost so Dean could live. Sam knew it was a heavy price for his brother to carry.

Where was the luck when Sam had been killed during Azazel's little 'Battle Royal'? Nowhere. Dean had done what he always did; he made his own luck and it had cost him his life.

A price he said was willingly given; after all he should already be dead.

Was it luck that Sam was immune to Lilith's demonic attack? No. It was the cursed blood that flowed through Sam's veins, the catalyst that had started this long nightmare.

Luck had dealt Sam no favors when he'd attempted to bargain for Dean's soul. If Lady Luck did exist Sam was convinced she was a sadist; enjoying his torment almost as much as the demons before he ripped them from their hosts.

He was alone now; with nothing to sacrifice, nothing to offer that could pass for the Winchester's perverted idea of luck. And he wasn't about to change directions now. Luck wasn't going to bring Dean back from hell nor would it put a stop to Lilith.

It fell to him; to take a page from Dean's book, to do whatever it took to get the job done. He might never be forgiven for the choice he made; he was after all turning to his demonic heritage to find the strength he needed. But Sam knew he didn't really have any other options.

Because, as he'd known his entire life, the Winchester's 'luck' brought nothing but pain.
