Pauper and the Heiress

Prologue:

I was rudely disturbed by the creeking footsteps that travelled down the hallway. To think that he was sneaking out again after last time. I sighed heavily. A treat I had picked up on my own will. For almost three years now I have been trying to escape this maze of chaos that my brother had dragged me into. Why he allowed me to work for him was beyond my understanding. But I suppose that it was mainly my fault to ask him. I knew where my duty lied almost as well as I knew the fact that I'd get no sleep tonight.

I groaned, manoeuvring my way out of bed, before getting dressed. I hope Zeff is happy with what he's doing. Because he doesn't seem to give a crap.

Soon as I was outside, I was greeted with a slight nod. I frowned. How could he be so stupid. It's safer to play Russian roulette. Not only that... I had a really bad feeling about this. Like the constant chill that someone somewhere is watching you. I stopped at the end of an ally way as Zeff continued in it. Signalling for me to stay put. I already knew the drill. But this was different. It seemed no different. He was dealing to one of the regulars but... He seemed to be more on edge.

A few words were spoken between the two, before finally the man pulled a gun out and held it to my brothers head. It all happened so quickly. The loud bang smothering the cracking sound of my brothers skull. Crimson, decorating the walls. It didn't register. All that did was the golden almost cat-like eyes of the murderer, before he vanished into further darkness. I walked slowly towards the corpse once I was sure the man had left. Zeff's eyes stared back at me with a lifeless blood covered gaze. He knew what was coming to him and yet I didn't hear him beg, or flinch. His eyes didn't even widen in surprise or worry. Yet, he still accepted his fate. I coughed back a sob. Shut my eyes to ignore the blood that covered my hand as I respectfully closed his eyes. Finished, I rested my hand on his shoulder and whispered.

"You idiot..." Before standing from my crouch. And dialling for the police and ambulance service. Wiping my phone of any finger prints and deleting my sisters number off my phone. I placed the mobile in his hands and walked away. I will not take his death lightly. This was a chance to escape from this dangerous business, and I was going to grasp this opportunity.

...Goodbye Zeff...
