~Whispers To The Dark~
He was in the very depths of Mordor where his chance of survival was now hanging by a thread, yet Sam's mind was plagued with other worries. Worries which, to any other being, would pale in comparison to the place where the Hobbits rested, but were just as significant to Sam.
Sam shivered in the chilling air as he crawled over beside Frodo. Taking hold of the other Hobbit's hand, Sam took a deep breath; preparing himself for one of the bravest things he would do. Shakily, he began to speak.
"I don't really know why I'm doing this, and no doubt I'll go and start saying all the wrong words in all the wrong places...but you see Mister Frodo, that's how I feel. All jumbled up. I'm travelling through a place I shouldn't be near, and I'm having thoughts I ought not be thinking.." He paused momentarily, gripping Frodo's hand tightly.
"You must forgive me-I know you already carry a burden and it's not the time or place for me to bear you with another, yet I don't think I can keep this to myself for much longer. Every day we continue our journey I worry that we're climbing closer and closer to death and this thought has made me realise something." Sam's voice broke as tears fell from his eyes, a bitter, salty taste clinging to his lips.
"I-I love you. I've tried telling myself to stop feeling this way...but I can't. It's too strong for me to ignore Frodo, even though I know I should. For both our sakes. I just...I just needed to tell you. I'm sorry.' he whispered, leaning down and softly pressing his lips to Frodo's.
He was startled by a sudden noise, quickly drawing his sword in the direction of the sound. He stared into the darkness yet nothing came. Gollum still lay curled in the corner of a rock. Cautiously Sam let his hand fall to his side, though continued to grip onto the handle of the sword. He cast his gaze over Frodo's sleeping form once more.
He returned to his position of keeping guard, half-wishing that Frodo had been awake to hear his confession. Sam shook his head, attempting to clear his thoughts. He may be a long way from the Shire, a Hobbit in the very clutches of evil, yet he was still afraid to speak his true feelings.
"You're nothing but a fool, Samwise Gamgee" he muttered to himself. "Nothing."
He rested his back against the cold, grey rock behind him, getting ready for another hour or more of keeping watch. He directed his attention towards Gollum for a moment, then his sight wandered across to Frodo. Sam gasped lightly as his gaze was met with deep blue, smiling eyes.
