Lucius' Investments
Investments. That is what I do. Many people seem to think that I don't work. If they mean in the sense of actually making something physical, like wands, then they are correct. However if they mean in terms of making money, then they are wrong. The fact that I have a fortune now does not mean that it will last forever. I know this. So I invest in things.
I view almost everything as an investment. Some are more important than others, of course, but that is what they all are.
I have invested in St. Mungo's hospital. This may at first glance appear to be something like charity, but I do not give anything away. Ever. If you invest money in a hospital you will get better care when you are sick because they will have the resources.
I invested in the dark lord. That of course did not go as well as I had hoped it might. He fell, and with him so did my reputation. But I persevered and successfully pleaded my case, stating that I had been under the imperious curse. And why not? I had put a great deal of effort into it. I had gotten in a little too far, perhaps, but who needed to know that it was unintentional?
I invested in a marriage. My wife Narcissa is beautiful and obedient. She acts just a s a wife should. She was an investment towards a future. A future filled with young people. One where my children will live and create their own investments.
And she has paid off beautifully. For now I have a son. A beautiful son. As I stand beside her bed looking down at this tiny person she created I cannot help but wonder what he will become. He will be the greatest investment of my life, and, as I look down at this newborn I must think that he will be far, far more than that.
Finally there is a reason to give something everything that I have even though I don't know for certain that it will pay off. For Draco Malfoy I am willing to do that.
