Prompto sighed contentedly, "It's so romantic here." As he looked out over the water the sunset reflected back in oranges, reds, and pinks. Where it didn't reflect light it was an incredible cerulean color.
"And you get to enjoy it with us." Gladiolus reminded him, stepping onto the dock from the gondola.
"All three of us." Noctis pointed out.
"You," Ignis added, "are a lucky man."
"Come on guys," Prompto turned around, facing them, "Do you really have to ruin the moment?"
"We were simply reminding you of how precious the moment really is." Ignis responded smoothly, he and Gladiolus heading to the bar to order a drink.
Prompto sighed again, this time in resignation. "Yeah, sure." He turned back towards the water, forearms resting on the railing around the floating dock.
"What's up with you?" Noctis leaned on the railing next to him, close enough their arms were touching.
Prompto shook his head, trying to put find a way to put his thoughts into words. "I don't know man, it's just…" He looked down at his hands fidgeting. "We did it, we're here in Altissia, but something about it keeps bothering me."
Noctis snorted a laugh. "You're the one going on about how romantic it is, and how nice it is not to kill anything."
Prompto looked back up to the water, glittering like jewels in the fading light. "I like it here, it's great that we get to take a break from all that killing and stuff, but… no, it's stupid."
"Like something being stupid has stopped you from saying it before." Noctis prodded, bumping Prompto's shoulder with his own. "Spit it out."
Prompto scrunched his face, brows furrowed in thought. "Do you love Lady Lunafreya?"
Noctis just blinked a few times in confusion, staring at the profile of Prompto's face. "What?"
Prompto straightened a little, strengthening his resolve, but didn't turn to make eye contact. "Do you love Lady Lunafreya?"
Noctis opened his mouth, then closed it, quiet as he thought about his answer. "That's not a fair question." He decided on.
"Why not?" Prompto finally turned his head to look at Noctis, his cheeks flushing when he realized how close their faces were, and turned to look away again. "There's no peace treaty anymore, so technically you don't have to get married. So why is it unfair to ask?"
"Because," Noctis spoke slowly, "Because she is important to me." He finally concluded. "Maybe it's not love, but I do care about her."
Prompto nodded. "I just think that you should marry someone you love. Duty is one thing, but you don't have that duty anymore, but no one was asking what you wanted."
Noctis rubbed the back of his neck, looking down at the fish swimming near the dock. "I guess I never thought about it." He admitted. "I haven't seen her since I was eight, but I know she's a person I should want to marry."
"Do you think she loves you?" Prompto asked, pushing the subject.
"How the hell should I know?" Noctis sounded bitter, and angry.
"I do." Prompto's words were a whisper.
"What?" It wasn't clear if Noctis hadn't heard or didn't understand.
Prompto took a deep breath, and turned so he was facing Noctis, speaking firmly. "I love you."
Noctis stood there, not speaking, his mouth opening and closing as he tried to think of something to say. The longer they stared at each other the more uncomfortable it made Prompto, and his face flushed while he began to fidget.
"Look man," Prompto's embarrassment got the best of him and he instead focused on a point past Noctis's shoulder. "I don't expect an answer or anything, I just wanted you to know. You can pretend I didn't say anything."
Prompto turned to leave, heading over to the bar, he needed a drink.
Noctis turned back to the water, nearly black now that the sun had dipped below the horizon.
