Title: Savior

Disclaimer: The entirity of Harry Potter, including Snape and Malfoy, belongs to

J.K.Rowling. I'm just borrowing her characters to play with.

A/N: Sorry this is so short. It was an improv written in 26 minutes for a challenge, and I got informed by two people that I should post it here.

You hate this, having to go to his house and sit across from him in his big study. He smiles at you, and has no idea you work for the other side. Would he love you, claim you as his friend if he knew? No, he would avada kadavra you on the spot, without a thought for all you have shared, and somewhere, deep down, you know that.

You think that you can still save him, that there's still some shred of humanity, of feeling other than hate left in him. Maybe you are just in denial, but you don't care. He used to have warmth in those cold steel gray eyes. You like to think there still is, as you sit there and talk of things at the Ministry, and at the school. You talk about his son, and dread the moment when he brings up the Dark Lord and the upcoming war.

The war is your self-appointed deadline to save him. Once the war officially starts, you will really be on opposite sides, and if you cannot bring him over before then, there is little to no hope he will leave darkness. He is too proud to switch sides in the middle of a war. And if somehow, you both survive, and light wins, it would take a lifetime for him to forgive you. If darkness wins, you would not survive their victory celebration.

The time goes by quickly, and you must get back to the school. He stands to shake your hand before you duck into his fireplace. With your chilly hand incased in his two warm ones, you gaze into his eyes; cold, empty depths that send an ice shard through your heart. It is too late for him. It was always too late, but you would not let yourself admit it before now. You cannot save him, you never could. He was lost to the darkness a long time ago, and it has finally sucked everything out of him that you loved.

There is one thing you can do, however. You can save his son. His son is not yet completely lost, and you can save him from the fate of his father. You will not do this for the man standing in front of you, but for the man you knew with warmth in his eyes.
