Blindfolded by pride

Quote: "Could you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your connexions?" (Mr Darcy to Lizzy, page 189, Pride and Prejudice)

Credit for the beautiful cover of this story goes to Ellie (with the monsters). Thanks again!

He loved her. It was as simple as that.

Nothing could've stopped him from getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him. So it would've been pointless on anybody's part to try and stop him.

He was ready for her answer. He had no doubt that she loved him. It was just as simple as it was that he loved her.

What he wasn't ready for was her hesitation. She paused, grimaced and swallowed. The confusion on his face was apparent, so she whispered, "I can't."

-:-

He gave her time. He thought she would come to her senses sooner or later. But when she wouldn't respond he put down the question again in front of her.

He only had to grit his teeth and say, "Why?"

And that's when she snapped."Why? Darn it, Scorpius. Don't you understand? I just do not want to marry you!"

Her eyes were flashing, and anger and frustration was vibrating off of her, but he still wasn't convinced.

When she saw his firm expression she again started screaming, "I cannot endure it anymore!" He noticed how her vocabulary increased with her anger, a habit that she could never get rid of, and was surprised at himself for noticing something like that now.

"Scorpius, your father would never even look at me, and your mother would only tolerate me for you! That is not how I want to be treated by my future family. And it's just not them. It's all of your relations, Scorpius! They are certainly not people I would want to be connected with, and that's not mentioning the fact that they are not even suitable to be connected to my family. So, what else do you expect of me? Could you expect me to be rejoiced at the inferiority of your connections? No one could be pleased at that thought!"

There. She had said it. By the change in his expression, she knew she had hit the mark. She had insulted something so dear to him that he would never look back now; his family, his pride, his reputation. It was like a smack on the face.

She knew that once he opened his mouth now, he would only defend his family, but would not try to convince her to change her decision.

But she didn't let him. She turned around and dashed out the room, slamming the door on his face, and decided never to look back herself.

-:-

She thinks she's on the right path. Being married to him meant being married to his whole family, which was something that she could never have done.

He thinks he's right. She had insulted him, and running back to her now was something that he could never have done.

They turned their backs on each other, and went their separate ways.

But they never admitted that they were both wrong.

When logic and reason subsided, she was too proud to admit the aching of her heart at the thought of losing him.

When anger and indignation subsided, he was too proud to admit the pain at the thought of never going back to her.

It was too late now.

A/N: I was really hesitant with this story probably because I didn't think Scorpius would react like this just for an insult to his family. It seems natural that he wouldn't be too fond of them, but let's just pretend that the Malfoy family has got back their position in society, okay? ;)
