I was in control. I knew that. Chronos had said I was in control and that he wouldn't go back on that. I should have called his bluff and locked him up more than he already was. He had always been impulsive when it came to Rose.
"Let me out Ozpin."
"No. You said you'd stay out of this, so I expect you to stay out of this."
"Well, I take it back! Give me control!"
"No, now keep your trap shut," and with that, I shut the mental door in my mind to keep him silent. In retrospect, I should have locked it.
Looking at her now, the way she sat there with an air of innocents, I knew she had grown. She was so small, so fragile and dependant when we left her. Now, I couldn't see the same person, but I knew she was there, somewhere.
I decided to walk into the room, get this all started. I was about to walk from the observing room to the interrogation room that she and Goodwitch were in when I noticed I didn't have everything. I turned back and grabbed the plate.
"Can't forget these! When in doubt, bargain with cookies."
I walked into the room and just stood there. Chronos was silent as we saw her in person for the first time in 10 years. Gods, I just wanted to hug her. Just take her and leave. Abandon work, my friends, and the fight against Salem. But, I didn't. Instead, I forced back all of the impulses and just started to talk.
"You," I paused realizing I had nothing to say. Thankfully, Chronos helped me out here.
"Her eyes! Say something about them!"
"Have silver eyes," I put the cookies on the table hoping I could use them to get past whatever just happened. I could see Glenda out of the corner of my eye. I was either going to get an ear full after this, or interrogated. Most likely both, at the same time. Joy. My night was going to be a long one.
"So," I decided it was just best to jump right into it, "Where did you learn to do this?" I asked.
"Signal academy."
"Ok, so she went there after we left. Good to know. Also good to know that she can kill things. With a giant gardening tool. You know, we should really get her a new weapon. Or at least redesign this one if she's stubborn about it. She going to get herself killed if she keeps using this one."
"Will you shut up? I can't say I'm not in agreement, but I don't need to hear you right now."
"They taught you to use one of the most dangerous weapons ever designed?" Glenda and I must be on the same wavelength right now. That or she's in my head again.
"Yes?"
"Really?" Glenda asked. Honestly, I was with her in the boiling rage. Yes, Rose maybe a complete badass with the skill she has. Yes, she is supposed to fight Grimm because it would always be her instincts to do so seeing as she has silver eyes, but to teach a child, a literal child to use this thing and then set her free on the world when her training was far from over, and yes, I do see from this simple video that she is far more advanced than her current year and could easily keep up with the combat training at any of the four schools, but she is still too young!
I suddenly felt a lot calmer and looked over at Glenda. She was definitely in my head right now.
"Well, one teacher in particular," Rose rushed out seeing that neither of us looked too happy that Signal had done what she said. She finally looked down at the plate and snatched a cookie.
"Stress eating," Chronos popped up again.
She finished the plate in a matter of seconds clearly using her semblance to help, just a bit.
"You see, I've only ever seen one other scythe wielder of that skill before. A dusty old Qrow." I wanted to see if my suspicion was right.
"Thatsmyuncle!" She had a mouthful of cookies, and if it weren't for the fact that Chronos and I raised her from the time she was two till she was six and we knew her so well we wouldn't have been able to figure out what she had said. I looked over a Glenda quickly to see if she caught what Rose had said. If she had, then I'd continue normally if she didn't, I'd follow her queue. I'm not about to out myself or give Rose any clue who I am here! It's for her own safety!
Glenda looked dumbfounded. So playing dumb it was!
Rose swallowed her cookies and said her statement again realizing that she was not understood
"That's my uncle. He's a teacher at Signal. He taught me everything I know. I was complete garbage before he took me under his wing," whether Rose meant that literally or figuratively, I don't know. Qrow had told me he took an apprentice and that was why he couldn't take so many missions from me a few years ago, but he hadn't mentioned it was Rose. Had he done that, I would have ripped Rose from his care.
Ok, a little backstory here, Qrow is not a bad caretaker. He's a great person. If I had to trust him with Rose for any reason I would. I trust him with my life. The only reason I don't trust him now is that Qrow and Taiyang live together. Look, it's a long story that I don't want to get into right now, but if I could murder Taiyang and get away with it, I would have, a long time ago! Like his second year or fourth year depending on how lenient I wanted to be. But that's not the point right now, the point is, I don't like that Qrow hid this from me.
"And what would an adorable girl such as yourself be doing at a school designed to kill monsters?" I wanted to continue this conversation. I wanted to know what she knew.
"I want to be a huntress." It was the first time she held absolute confidence. The first time she sounded like she truly knew what was going on. I had to sit down. This was not something I expected from her.
"You want to kill monsters?"
"Yes." I took a breath to speak again but she cut me off. Whether she knew that she did or not, i don't know.
"I only have two more years at Signal, then I'm applying to all the schools. One of them has to accept me, but if Beacon accepts me I'm going. My mom went to Beacon, and I'm going to continue her legacy if I can."
"That's our girl! Ozpin! Let me hug her!"
I just ignored Chronos. It wasn't going to happen.
"Do you know who I am?" Gods I wanted her to say my name. The name I was so used to hearing her voice say, but that dream went up in flames in a matter of seconds.
"Professor Ozpin. You run Beacon." I wanted to bang my head against a wall. I had made my decision. If my Rose wanted to get into Beacon, then that's where she was going to be. I suddenly felt a minor pressure in my head. It was too much pressure to be a regular head ace, meaning it had to be something else. I looked over to Glenda to see if it was her. It was.
"She doesn't look too happy. You think we're letting thoughts slip?"
"No, it has to be small things like feelings and the want to bring Rose to Beacon," the pressure increased for a second and i knew it was that. I let the feelings off that she was going to get into the school wether Glenda liked it or not. Yes, I was being impulsive. And a bit overprotective, but there was no way i was just going to let Taiyang get the chance to find Rose. Glenda saw that something was up and just let it go with an eye roll and a scoff.
Happy I had won I turned back to Rose. I had to keep the glee from my voice when I started to talk again.
"Do you want to come to my school?" and the way her eyes light up it was like it was Christmas and her birthday all at once.
"YES!" I have a feeling she would have jumped the table and hugged me if Glenda wasn't there. She laid a firm 'Look' on her wich preventer that. Sadly.
After letting her go Glenda and I waited for our car to arrive so we could get back to the campus. School started in three days. It was silent for a moment before the silence was broken.
"How do you know her?" Not expecting her to be that straight forward I simply looked at her.
"Huh?"
"How do you know Ruby Rose? She's supposed to be dead, but you were completely unfazed when you saw her. Why?"
"Glenda, If I could tell you, I would. But the fact of the matter is-" I didn't get to finish that sentence.
"'Fact of the matter'? Ozpin, you know what I am. I know what you are. I know who you are and I'm the one who can, and will, call you out on your bull shit. Cut the crap. I'm going to let this go, but if for any reason, any reason you seem to be letting the other side of you out involving Ms. Rose, I will take matters into my own hands. Do you understand?"
"Yes. Thank you."
"Ya Ya. Don't thank me yet until I stop you from committing murder."
"Why would I commit murder?" I asked as I got in the car letting Glenda drive.
"Why wouldn't you commit murder?" she was smiling a little as we pulled away from the curb.
