I've always dreamed I could talk, but I can't, I'm just a fountain. Humans just don't pay attention to me. They use to, when I was first built, when my concrete was still white and didn't have cracks. Over the years, being frozen and then de-thawed continuously has really taken its toll, and don't even get me started on the acid rain. But now and then I would get a visitor or two, a couple out for a walk or little children stealing my water, for what, I can't imagine, since there was a pool right beside me. The odd teenager would come running by, but they never stopped.

Which was why when two boys came by I was surprised. They stopped right beside me and started talking to each other. Well, I would assume that's what they were doing, their lips were moving. You see, fountains don't have ears, so I couldn't hear anything. It was dark so I couldn't get a good look at them.

They were both looking to the right of me while frowning. Five other guys showed up and I wondered if they were all friends. I soon realized they weren't. One of the five guys stepped forward and grabbed the smaller of the two by the scruff of his neck and stuck his head under my water.

I tried to tell them to stop, because whatever was in his hair was turning my water all murky and cloudy.

The taller of the two pulled something out of his back pocket. It was sharp looking and looked to be silver, but I wasn't sure. He ran at the second tallest and thrust his arm forward so that the sharp object was imbedded in his stomach. When he pulled his arm back, he still had the sharp thing in his hand. The boy with the sharp thing turned toward the guy who was still holding the little water tainter's head under my water, and flailed his arms around weirdly. The bigger guy quickly let go of the tainters head and backed away before turning around and sprinting away. The others didn't hesitate to fallow; not sparing a glance at their friend who had fallen to the ground curled in on him self. I figured they didn't want to stain my concrete like their friend. I wanted to yell at them to come back and take him with them, because whatever substance was seeping out of him really was staining my cement, but they didn't.

The other two boys were sitting on the ground, their lips moving and they both were shaking. They were looking at the guy, who was staining my concrete, but neither made a move to touch him, and he didn't move. After a while, the two stood up and ran off, leaving the guy on the ground. I mourned the loss of the couples and the little kids that wouldn't visit any more, after all who would want to visit the fountain with nasty water and stained concrete? The birds wouldn't want to visit to take a bath either, after all, my water is filthy now. I didn't try to talk to the guy on the ground, because even if I could talk, I knew he wouldn't hear me.

I'm just a fountain.
